Asafa pulls up in Morocco
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Former world record holder Asafa Powell pulled up in a 100-m race in Rabat, Morocco yesterday causing fears he might be injured just weeks away from the National Trials.
Powell, who had slowed down to finish at the back of the pack in a 200-m race at the Jamaica National Jamaica International Invitational a month ago, stopped running just at the end of the drive phase about 40 metres into the race and walked to the line in 36.13 seconds.
Less than an hour after the race, MVP president Bruce James told the Observer in an email that Powell had suffered “a cramp” and was being tended to in the medical area.
In a video of the race Powell, who looked relaxed before the race, bouncing around in front of his blocks, got off to a good start but slowed down.
He was not seen grabbing any part of his leg in the video.
The race was won by 26-year-old Moroccan Aziz Ouhadi in a meet record 10.27 seconds, beating Portugal’s Francis Obikwelu (10.31) and Nigeria’s Peter Emelieze (10.40).
Earlier Powell’s MVP teammate Ainsley Waugh took second place in the 200m in 20.52 seconds, beaten by Belgium’s Jonathon Borlee in a season-best 20.42 seconds, while another Jamaican Marvin Anderson was fourth in 20.59 seconds.
