Williams, Morrison notch wins at Junior Trials
IAAF World Youth leader Christania Williams of Edwin Allen and Natasha Morrison of UTech were the highlights of yesterday’s first day of action of the Supreme Ventures/JAAA National Junior Championships at the National Stadium, winning the Girls Under-18 and Under-20 100m events, respectively.
The chunky Williams finished a good 10 metres ahead of Holmwood’s Diana Johnson to claim the Under-18 event in 11.61 seconds to Johnson’s 12.07 seconds. Kedisha Dallas, also of Holmwood, posted 12.09 for third.
Morrison topped a competitive field in the girls Under-20, taking victory in 11.89 seconds and finishing ahead of Celia Walter, 12.20, while ISSA Girls Class Two champion Cardine Copeland of Wolmer’s was third in 12.39.
Meanwhile, St Elizabeth Technical’s Aleshia McLaughlin was a double winner, capturing both the girls’ Under-20 3000m and the Under-18 1500m events.
The petite McLaughlin first posted 11:07.58 to take the 3000m ahead of teammate Nickesha Williams in 11:48.13. She returned few hours later to add the 1500m title in 4:57.76.
Petrene Plummer of Holmwood won the Under-20 equivalent in 5:07.19, actually finishing behind McLaughlin, as the races were combined.
Edwin Allen sensation Ristananna Tracey claimed the Under-20 Girls 400m hurdles in 1:01.42. The race was combined with the Under-18 Girls event which saw STETHS’ Kimone Green winning in 1:02.25 and Chantae Green of Holmwood second in 1:03.42.
Girls Champs Class 2 long jump winner Janieve Russell captured the Under-20 event in 6.19m.
p>Rochelle Farquharson finished a disappointing second after clearing 5.89m, well off her season and personal best 6.48m, while Nickevea Wilson of Camperdown was third with 5.84m.
Wilson returned to take the Under-20 triple jump with 12.56m ahead of St Jago’s Avril McGhee, 12.11m, and Robiann Bromfield of Immaculate Conception, 11.75m.
Manchester High’s Chanice Porter cleared 1.80m for victory in the Under-18 girls’ high jump, beating Krista Gay Taylor of Alpha who cleared a similar height. Doneike Daniels of Campion was third with 1.55m.
Vere Technical’s Sabrina Allen notched victory in the triple jump with 12.49m in the U-18s, ahead of STETH’s Opal James, 11.43m, and Shenelle McKay of Alpha, 11.30.
The two-day trials to select Jamaica’s team for the Pan American Junior Championships in Florida and the IAAF World Youth Championships in Lille, France continue today with finals in the Under-18 shot put, long jump, 200m, 100m hurdles, 400m, and 800m as well as the under-20 shot put, high jump, 100m hurdles, 400m, and 800m.
The U-18 200 will take the spotlight with the unbeaten Shericka Jackson of Vere expected to be challenged by Chanice Bonner of The Queen’s.
Megan Simmonds of St Andrew will line up in the U-18 100 hurdles against Chrisdale McCarthy of St Jago, while Holmwood’s Russell will go for titles in the U-20 100m hurdles and 200 to add to her long jump victory.
