Bunker Dust upsets in Drum Beat Trophy
FOUR-TO-ONE chance Bunker Dust took advantage of a 6.0kg swing at the weights to upset 1-2 favourite Pedro Bluff in the $438,000 Drum Beat Trophy claiming feature by 2 1/2 lengths at Caymanas Park yesterday.
Reserved for the first 600 metres of the race, claiming apprentice Robert Halledeen sent Bunker Dust in chase of the leading pact after entering the final 400 metres.
And from deep inside with deft galloping strides, the Lawrence Freemantle-owned and trained seven-year-old gelding came forward strongly against a firm head-wind to sweep past Pedro Bluff in mid-track and returned to score a long overdue win.
Considered something of a specialist over 1,000 metres straight in his earlier years, Bunker Dust clocked 1:02.3 seconds for the victory among three-year-olds upward and six-year-olds (NW3), who started for a claiming tag of $180,000 since February 22.
Medstar, ridden by Dane Nelson, showed as a 5-1 bet 3 1/4 lengths back, while Smile completed the frame another 5 3/4 lengths back at odds of 99-1.
