Rock The Cloth: Icon Inspiration: Sade
Our focus for the next few weeks will be on those icons of fashion, film and music who influence our styling. We commence our series with Sade.
The preparation for the article led me to a description of the artiste as a “simple organic beauty with [minimalistic] style” — the exact description we would have used.
Sade, a trained fashion designer, is known for her laid-back style. Her looks are usually very simple silhouettes with few design details and often fit to her curves. Some looks are basic commercial items, such as jeans and a white shirt, while other design costumes were re-created from classic looks.
For inspiration, we looked at a two-piece skirt and blouse performance outfit as well as the white shirt, which she has worn a few times. Our model, Miss Jamaica Universe contestant, Kadyan, bears a striking resemblance to Sade and was spot-on for this shoot… enjoy.
The skirt is great for summer.
Steps: skirt
1. Cut front and back pieces of fabric.
2. Cut elastic to measure waist less 2″.
3. Join front and back at the sides.
4. Attach the elastic:
a. Stitch to right side using a zig-zag stitch.
b. Fold to the wrong side and stitch in place.
5. Finish edges and hem.
