Ja claim eighth medal at Special Olympics
TWENTY-FIVE-YEAR-OLD Shereen Gordon clinched gold in the F31 bocce singles and Nigel Davis, 34, grabbed silver in the M2 10,000m run at the Oaka Olympic Stadium as Jamaica’s medal tally jumped to eight at the 13th Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens, Greece.
Davis clocked 38:30.87 for second place as Cuban Hormelys Pichardo won the gold in a time of 32:12.33.
Earlier this week, 25-year-old Jonathan Lowe grabbed gold after winning the M10 100m freestyle at the Olympic Stadium Aquatics Arena.
Romaine Austin, 14, became a triple medallist after taking the silver in both the M11 300m and the M13 100m roller skating events.
He also teamed with Monique Brown, 18, for the bronze in the roller skating M5 2x200m relay, won by China’s Lijuan and Ye Yuan in a time of 53.48 seconds, followed by Germany’s Daniel Heizenroeder and Matthias Puetz, who clocked 57.20 seconds. Jamaica skated to 57.60 seconds.
Brown earned silver in the roller skating F11 300m with a time of 45.10 seconds.
In football, Jamaica kept their title hopes alive after they were awarded a 3-0 win over Russia. Head of delegation Lorna Bell said “favourites Russia failed to take the field because of numerous yellow cards, along with three yellow cards received in their previous game”.
In other football results, Uruguay hammered Denmark 7-0, Greece whipped Austria 5-0, Brazil punished Cote D’Ivoire 5-0, Great Britain crushed Bharat (India) 7-1, Ireland edged Australia 3-2, and United Arab Emirates drubbed Spain 6-2.
Today is a rest day for football, with Jamaica to tackle Uruguay tomorrow morning.
The Special Olympics World Summer Games will end on Monday, July 4.
