DIY Area Rug
On the hunt for the perfect rug, I couldn’t find just what I needed, until I saw a bunch of bath mats in Joseph’s, just the colours I needed, and came up with the idea of making one big area rug from eight bath mats.
I thought of using heavy-duty tape on the backs to join the rugs to each other, but in order to get the pattern I wanted and a real patchwork effect, I needed to cut each rug in half. This could be a bit challenging without the right equipment and supplies, because one would need to bind the cut edges to prevent fraying. This is a job for professionals, so take your rug to a carpet maker. I went to the Myries at Fashion Carpet and rugs and had them cut and join my mats to create a 6′ X 8′ masterpiece for me.
My initial plan of joining the rugs with heavy-duty tape will work if:
1. The rugs you’re using are exactly the same size
2. They have unbound edges where they will be joined (like woollen or sisal rugs)
3. They don’t require cutting
A curved upholstery needle can also work for you to join your rugs, for a more secure finish.
So keep your eyes peeled for those perfect finds.
