Comfy cushions
To get active kids to sit for any length of time is a challenge. So you have to make absolutely sure that if you’re going to put them down to sit and do anything…the seating HAS to be comfortable. Take these adorable chairs in today’s project, for example – wonderful wooden chairs and table set – but how long can little tushies last on these hard chairs? So I set out to make them super comfy as well as cute, with seat cushions.
For this project you will need:
o A yard and a half of a fabric of your choice
o A half-yard of 2-inch thick sponge/foam
o Cardboard/paper
You will then:
o Make a template of the seat of the chair (pictured). You can fold it exactly in half when cutting so that both sides are exactly alike
o Use this template to precisely trace and cut out the sponge/foam (pictured)
o Use the template to cut out your cushion covers by:
o Folding the template in half lengthwise
o Folding fabric in half lengthwise to the same width of the template plus 1 _ inches for seam allowance and sponge
o Cut out 8 pieces of fabric for back and front of cushions
o Cut four 4-inch-wide strips of fabric that are the length of the front and 2 sides of the cushion (in my case 30 inches). This is for the frill of the cushion
o Cut eight 1-inch X 20-inch strips for ties
o Fold and stitch 4-inch frill strips
o Place back and front piece of cushion covers together (right sides facing) with frill strips in-between running along the sides and front of cushion cover. Make sure all 3 have equal seam allowances
o Stitch the cushion shut except for the back
o Stitch tie strips, turn them right side out and press them
o Mark on the cushion cover where the spindles fall to which the cushions will be tied and fold and stitch ties in place, one on either side
o Turn cover right sides out and insert sponge/foam
o Fold seams in and close by stitching as close to the edge as you can
And you’re done. Cushy little cushions for her little tushy.
