Cocktails With – Kaysian Bourke
2011 is shaping up to be a year of new beginnings for Kaysian Bourke. For one, there’s her nuptials just last month to beau Kevin Bourke, with whom she has two young children. There’s opening a boutique with designer friend Camesha Powell, later in the year, also in the cards. And then, there’s the matter of building a reputation for her new interior decorating/event planning company ShinDig (which styled yesterday’s Fiction Beach party for SPF Weekend). It’s a lot on 28-year-old Kaysian’s plate but the budding entrepreneur is ready to take it all on, and as we chat over lunch at Tracks and Records, she is refreshingly engaging company.
What are you sipping?
Pinot Grigio.
Socialite or homebody?
Socialite. I like to be out because many of my friends are on the social scene and I have to network to seek clientele for my businesses.
Flats or stilettos?
Bridget sandals for the daytime but most definitely stilettos for the night. Stilettos add oomph to any outfit and being taller makes you look thinner.
Jeans or LBD?
An LBD because it’s classy and can go perfectly from day to night.
What’s your must-have accessory?
Without a doubt, my cell phone. I’m a mom so I have to check in on my kids when I’m on the run.
How do you define your style?
It’s eclectic and bohemian.
What’s in your handbag?
My Mac compact, Coach coin purse, Revlon Fire and Ice red lipstick, Dentyne gum, my Flip video camera to record site visits, colour swatch, my ShinDig cards, SPF promotional CDs, my BlackBerry and my car keys.
What perfume are you spraying?
J’Adore by Dior.
Who does your hair?
Tancecia Thompson from New U.
Who does your nails?
Lisa at Club Clippers Salon.
When you’re not working, where’s the best place to find you?
At home with my family, enjoying company with my son Matthew who’s three and six-month-old daughter Jazzmine.
So, what’s it like being a relatively new mum?
Exciting, but it can be stressful at times. It’s a juggling act but I’m now at a stage where I’m enjoying it.
As a budding businesswoman, what are the challenges you encounter?
Since I’m a new business, it would be building interpersonal relationships with clients and working assiduously on jobs to make them develop faith in you. Also, working long hours and going the extra mile to please the client and make them develop a trust in the jobs I propose as an event planner. I’ve been getting good feedback so I’m happy.
What’s in the car stereo/on your iPod?
The Fiction Summer CD, a house mix from Ibiza, a culture mix I bought along the road in Half-Way-Tree and the SPF CD.
Who or what inspires you?
I’m inspired by my children because they make me want to be a better person, and I draw inspiration from my husband Kevin because he’s a very good businessman.
What’s your idea of the perfect date?
Just the two of us on a quiet beach, with no servers, enjoying a good bottle of wine and fruits.
What’s your idea of the perfect man?
Compassionate, understanding and someone who is loved by people because when someone is, it’s for a reason and such a person usually gives out positive energy. That man is my husband. He is perfect in my eyes. That’s why I married him.
What projects are you working on?
At the moment, I’m working on opening a boutique called Modish Studios with Camesha Powell from Posh Designs, in October. It’s a boutique for women which will offer mid- to high-end merchandise.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?
My father-in-law Christopher Bourke told me “You can’t stress over things you can’t control.”
And 10 years from now?
I see myself hopefully operating a successful business, both in merchandising and decorating. I would hope that the things I’m involved in also bring about a change and translate into an international feel.
