Actus Reus, Princechad oblige in midweek features
FAVOURED Actus Reus and Princechad shared separate divisions of the $715,000 Dr Clifford Grey Memorial divided feature by a combined 2 3/4 lengths in almost identical times to shed their maiden tags at Caymanas Park on Wednesday.
Actus Reus, a 3-5 bet trained by Anthony Nunes for owners Elias Haloute and Stephan Narinesingh, beat the 10-1 chance Spirit Way, ridden by Vijay Ashley, by 2 1/2 lengths to win Division One and open his winning account in the maiden special weight contest for nativebred three-year-olds.
Gold Runner, who was well supported as a 2-1 chance, again disappointed his backers. After being prominent for most of the journey, he found nil in the drive, but held on mildly to show under Wesley Henry with the 99-1 bet, Saga Boy, completing the frame, partnered by Richard Mairs, in the 11-horse field.
In Division Two, Princechad, a 2-1 chance, after taking command inside the final 100 metres, had to be driven to the board to last home under Robert Halledeen to relinquish his maiden tag in a driving finish by a neck over 20-1 shot, Fulljoy, ridden by Oneil Mullings.
Owned and trained by Edward S Walker, Princechad ran 1300 metres in 1:22.1 to get off the mark in his 20th attempt.
Simply Outstanding, who looked a likely winner in the stretch run until Halledeen produced Princechad, held on for third money under Ashley as a 10-1 betting option, Running Man, well supported at odds of 5-2, closed up the frame in the field of 12.
Meanwhile, Gary Subratie saddled another double to take training honours, while Cardenas continued his march to his first local jockey’s title by booting home two winners to increase his tally to 56 wins — a lead of three ahead of Shane Ellis, who is on 53. Champion jockey Omar Walker lags behind on 48.
With his two wins he, however, had to share the limelight with fellow Panamanian Ameth Robles, who also rode two winners on the truncated midweek eight-race card.
