My Kingston – Gary Matalon
What are your earliest memories of Kingston?
Swimming in the pool at my grandparents’ house in Beverly Hills while devouring patties, cream soda and Kisko pops.
What would you do if you were mayor of Kingston for a day?
A day isn’t nearly long enough for any much-needed change in Kingston so I’d use it to set out a plan for what is needed to be done in the other 364 days. A proper plan is critical to the success of any project or initiative.
What is your middle name?
Charles.
What are your favourite home comforts?
Not sure if my wife and kids can be considered home comforts but, if not, I would say my electronics: audio/video, Apple TV, Google TV and iPod Mixer.
Name the last book you read.
The Goal: A Process of Ongoing Improvement by Eliyahu M Goldratt.
Who was the last great performer you saw in concert?
Prince in Madison Square Garden; Shaggy in New Kingston; and Beres Hammond at Sumfest. All were amazing in different ways.
What cologne are you currently splashing?
None actually, it makes my wife sneeze.
What is your preferred beverage?
Good old bottled water most of the time. On a night out, I usually go for Blackwell Rum or Appleton V/X if Blackwell isn’t available.
What makes you laugh?
A good joke or people’s comments on Twitter.
When was the last time you cried?
Every time I step on the scale after killing myself at the gym!
What last did you splurge on?
Haven’t splurged much recently… I guess my iPad.

Share with us some of your upcoming projects.
Listing KLE on the local stock market, and expanding the Fiction and Tracks & Records brands.
You’re part-owner of Fiction Nightclub and Tracks and Records eatery. What was the most recent club or restaurant you’ve patronised that left you amazed?
Luciano’s of Chicago in Nassau, Bahamas. The service, food and ambiance were all out of this world.
They say the average shelf life of a club is five years. Do you think Fiction will outlive that life expectancy?
Absolutely. We have developed a strategy around lessons we have learnt from our predecessors in the industry. Through this, we ensure we remain current and deliver consistently high levels of customer experience.
What’s the smartest thing an entrepreneur can do to stand out from the pack in his business?
Think outside the box. Ensure you have not only the cutting-edge ideas but the cutting-edge infrastructure and business practices to execute your plan effectively.
Which person, dead or alive, do you most admire and why?
My grandfather Moses Matalon. He started with very little and became not only very successful in business but also gave back to his country in a big way.
What is your philosophy?
Make it happen.
