Saint Cecelia, Ellis steal Caymanas show
FAVOURED champion sprinter Saint Cecelia ran 1,100 metres in a time of 1:03.4 to equal the track record with another magnificent display of sprinting in the $1,188,000 She’s On Wheels Trophy (Gr 1) feature at Caymanas Park yesterday.
Installed the 3-5 favourite and trained by Spencer Chung for owners Stephen A & WP Valentine Chung, Saint Cecelia, who was running with such a light impost of 53.0kg for the first time in most of her 22-race career, showed appreciation for the weight swing and streaked to a big 2 1/2 lengths win in the field of Graded Stakes three-year-olds upward. Five ran.
The event, which was billed a showdown between some of the best sprinters in local horseracing at the Graded Stakes level, never really materialised.
After watching Dick Cardenas taking Dance So Sweet through the first first 400 metres unmolested, Wesley Henry then asked Saint Cecelia who is the daughter of She’s On Wheel, to go in chase. She then grabbed the lead leaving the 800-metres marker and after this it was no longer a race. And even though coming back a bit in the stretch, the champion sprinter had done enough to win the event and equal another record in the grade as she also won the Reggae Trophy (Gr 1) on June 9 in Stakes record-equalling time of 56.2 over 1000 metres straight.
Dance So Sweet, installed the joint second favourite at 2-1 with Ronron, held on for second money with Lifeisjustforliving, ridden by Paul Francis, showing with Ronron, ridden by Shane Ellis, completing the frame.
Earlier Ellis, who on many occasions rode Saint Cecelia to victory, set the stage for the record-equalling run when the title-chasing jockey booted home his first five-timer for the season.
Following a perfect triple in the opening races aboard Mr Skill, Nubian Queen and Guan Yu in the third Ellis went on the pilot Luscious in the fifth and and Pocket Money in the seventh to move his tally to 61 and now leads the jockeys’ standings.
