W’House, Arnett in Cup finale
WATERHOUSE and Arnett Gardens will be hunting the Claro Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Champions Cup and the $250,000 winning prize at the Edward Seaga Stadium today at 6:00 pm.
The eight-team tournament which started on August 9 and will see the runners-up collecting $170,000 should provide spectators with a thrilling finale based on the attacking prowess of both teams.
In their earlier Zone A match, Waterhouse raced into a two-goal lead but were pegged back by Arnett Gardens in an enthralling 2-2 draw and today’s final is expected to be another humdinger.
Waterhouse, under the astute guidance of Donovan Duckie, topped their group ahead of Arnett Gardens and will start favourites to lift the trophy, especially with striker Jermaine “Tuffy” Anderson in tremendous form.
The powerful and hard-running striker has netted six times in four games and will provide the Arnett backline with a lot of work.
But Waterhouse are far from being a one-man team. In 28-year-old Vincent “Junie” Earle, the Drewsland outfit has one of, if not the best midfielder playing in Jamaica locally.
The talented midfield general’s impressive performances have caught the eyes of the Brazilians coaches and a call-up to the national team looks imminent.
Then there are the wily Damion “Kappo” Williams, the huge Hugh Howell, the improving defender Rohan Amos, Peter Keys, the skilful Akeem Thenstead and Loxley Thomas.
Waterhouse have a lot of firepower and will be very hard to deny a hold on the Claro KSAFA Champions Cup.
But Arnett Gardens will have other ideas and are bubbling with confidence after showing a lot of resilience in battling for 2-2 draws against both Waterhouse and Tivoli Gardens.
Arnett Gardens’ head coach Paul ‘Tegat” Davis, has the ‘Junglists’ up and running while playing some attractive, attacking football. In four matches to date, they have banged in 18 goals with Kirk Ramsey, Newton Sterling and new signee Errol Stevens constantly among the goals.
Coach Davis seems to have found a useful blend of players and they looked to have gelled into a formidable unit.
Former St George’s midfielder Girvan Brown has settled well in midfield and is pulling the strings with some commanding performances.
The red-and-black-clad aggregation is on a high following an impressive 3-1 whipping of Harbour View in the semi-final and it would take a foolish man to bet against them not lifting the Claro Champions Cup.
In what should be a thrilling encounter at the Edward Seaga Stadium, Arnett Gardens with their more balanced attack should get the better of Waterhouse, especially if they can contain the prolific Anderson.
