Rollicking start for St Ann in 50-overs

REIGNING champions St Ann CA got off to a winning start in the Jamaica Cricket Association’s 50-overs club competition with an 18-run win over Zone A neighbours Trelawny at Noranda Bauxite playfield in Discovery Bay yesterday.

Winning the toss and opting to bat, the home team, propped up by Hanchard Hamilton’s 42 not out and Xavier Marshall’s 21, mustered 193 all out from 36 overs and two balls.

Out-of-favour national all-rounder Lorenzo Ingram took 4-34 with his left-arm spin, while Kemar Allen took 2-20.

Chasing what seemed a gettable target, the Trelawny team struggled to 175 all out in the 39th over against left-arm unorthodox spinner Andre Dwyer, who took 4-48. All-rounder Duron Whyte took 2-16.

Top batsmen for Trelawny were Oral Rankine (41) and Lorenzo Ingram (21).

Scores: St Ann CA 193 (36.2 overs); Trelawny 175 (38.1 overs)

In the other Zone A encounter, rain forced a no-result in the showdown between Hanover and Westmoreland in Elgin Town.

Young Jamaican all-rounder Jermaine Blackwood starred for Hanover with 4-27 to dismiss Westmoreland for 106, but bad weather ended the home team’s victory push prematurely at 30-1.

Scores: Westmoreland 106 (31.4 overs); Hanover CA 30-1 (6 overs)

At Chedwin Park, home team St Catherine CC clipped Zone B rivals St Elizabeth by 12 runs in a low-scoring encounter.

Sent into bat, St Catherine were bundled over for 88 thanks to Alton Beckford’s 4-24 and Kenroy Williams’ 3-10.

West Indies fast bowling all-rounder Andre Russell and national off-spinner Bevon Brown then took four wickets each to blast out St Elizabeth for 76.

Scores: St Catherine CC 88 (37.2 overs); St Elizabeth CA 76 (24.3 overs)

In the other Zone B match-up, Clarendon lost the toss, but swept aside hosts GC Foster by seven wickets.

Jamaican left-arm swing bowler Krishmar Santokie was the main destroyer for with 4-13, while Errol Thomas chipped in with 3-27.

Scores: GC Foster 76 (33.2 overs); Clarendon 78-3 (17.5 overs)

In Zone C, left-hander Simon Jackson and pacer Boris Hutchinson led visitors Kingston CC to a 138-run win over Police at Elletson Road.

After opting to bat, Kingston lost Davion Johnson (11), Robert Weir (7) and Chadwick Walton (0)- all to opening bowler Renford Boo, but managed a challenging 218 thanks to a fourth-wicket 101-run stand between Simon Jackson (89) and Andre Bryce (48).

Jackson, the national opener batting at No 4 for Kingston, cracked nine fours and a six off 127 balls.

Boodie ended with 3-36 off five overs for Police, while off-spinner Kemar Marshall took 3-38 in 10. Fitzgerald Anderson snatched two wickets.

Chasing 219, Police never stood a chance as they were blown away by Hutchinson, who ended with 6-21 in eight overs and four balls. Leg-spinner Paul Harrison supported with 2-8 off six. Ordane Huntchinson topscored with 28.

Scores: Kingston CC 218 (48.3 overs); Police SC 80 (29.4 overs)

Also in Zone C, St Mary CA beat the visiting Jamaica Defence Force by 22 runs under the Duckworth & Lewis method at Eden Park.

Scores: JDF 172 all out; St Mary CA 131-5 (32 overs)

In the lone Zone D clash, Brian Clark’s 106 led Kensington to a 266-run walloping of hapless Boys’ Town in Rollington Town.

Scores: Kensington CC 321-6 (50 overs); Boys’ Town 55 all out (18 overs)

The top team in each group will advance to the semi-final stage.
