Clarendon trio stays perfect in D’Cup

FOUR PATHS, Clarendon — Former champions Garvey Maceo High led a trio of winners who extended their winning starts in the ISSA/Gatorade/Digicel daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition yesterday.

Garvey Maceo took over the lead in Zone I, while Lennon High and Edwin Allen were also winners in Zone H.

After the 9-0 whipping of Central High on Saturday, Garvey Maceo eased to a 3-0 win over Vere Technical in their first regular season meeting yesterday.

Akeem Gabbidon and Ishmael Curry scored their third goals of the season, along with Melano Morgan, who got his second for Garvey to improve to six points in Zone I.

Denbigh High rebounded form their opening loss to Glenmuir with a 3-0 win over Bustamante High.

Lennon, last season’s beaten finalists, defeated Alston High, 6-0, to lead Zone H on goal difference, while Edwin Allen beat Thompson Town, 2-0.

Meanwhile, over 30 schools — including former champions St James High and Godfrey Stewart, as well as last season’s Ben Francis Knock-out finalists Paul Bogle — will be making their season’s debut as the competition continues with a 28-game schedule today.

Six schools, led by Munro College, who have won both matches played so far, will be hoping to extend their perfect win records, including William Knibb Memorial, defending champions Rusea’s, St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS), Black River and Bellefield High, who face Spalding High in possibly the game of the day in Zone G.

Spalding and Manchester High are tied for the lead with four points, one more that Bellefield, who were winners on Saturday.

Munro face a tricky Zone F away game against Black River, who were 4-1 winners on Monday over Lacovia, while Munro blanked Newell, 5-0.

Rusea’s fan will be expecting another double-digit score when they face Knockalva in a Zone B match at Ramble after demolishing Green Island, 10-0, last Saturday.

At Jarrett Park, St James — the 2008 champions and semi-finalists for the past two seasons — are in rebuilding mode and tackle Green Pond who came from 0-2 down to beat them in a first-round game last season. However, that was Green Pond’s first and last win of the season.

The battle for honours in an expected competitive Zone E will also begin with defending group champions Mannings School away to Maud McLeod, Grange Hill — who edged Godfrey Stewart on goal difference for second place — hosting Petersfield, and Godfrey Stewart travelling to Little London.

Yesterday’s results:

Zone H: Lennon 6 Alston 0; Edwin Allen 2 Thompson Town 0

Zone I: Garvey Maceo 3 Vere Technical 0; Denbigh 3 Bustamante 0.

Today’s schedule:

Zone A: William Knibb vs Spot Valley; St James vs Green Pond;

Muschett vs Cornwall College

Zone B: Frome vs Anchovy; Knockalva vs Rusea’s; Green Island vs Maldon

Zone C: Cedric Titus vs Ocho Rios; Marcus Garvey vs York Castle;

Brown’s Town vs Albert Town

Zone D: Iona vs St Mary High; St Mary Tech vs Tacky

Zone E: Grange Hill vs Petersfield; Maud McLeod vs Mannings; Godfrey Stewart vs Little London

Zone F: Newell vs DeCarteret College; Balaclava vs STETHS; Black River vs Munro College

Zone G: Manchester vs Holmwood; Spalding vs Bellefield; Christiana vs Knox

Zone J: McGrath vs Ewarton; Old Harbour vs Tacius Golding; Bog Walk vs Dinthill

Zone K: Buff Bay vs Fair Prospect; Titchfield vs Annotto Bay; Happy Grove vs Port Antonio

Zone L: Robert Lightbourne vs St Thomas Tech; Seaforth vs Paul Bogle.
