Dover battle resumes at ‘Heroes of Speed’ meet
The Jamaica Race Drivers Club (JRDC) Wednesday launched the Heroes of Speed race meet with the promise of continued rivalry between ace drivers Doug Gore and David Summerbell Jr.
“This is what people like to see,” JRDC president Hilary Jardine remarked at the launch held at the Sports Development Foundation’s office in Kingston.
Jardine also took time out to pay tribute to the founder of the Dover race way in St Ann, Alfred Chen. “He is also one of our heroes,” declared Jardine, who added that a motorrace track closer to Kingston would pay handsome dividends to anyone bold enough to undertake such a venture.
The Heroes of Speed racemeet is the fourth and final of the 2011 local season.
The meet, scheduled for National Heroes Day, Monday, October 17 wil have 15 races on the day, three of which will be motorcycle races. Sunday (October 16) is qualifying day with drivers and riders seeking to get pole position.
Feature on race day is the Alfred Chen Memorial Thundersport Race. The 12-lap race, which is a tribute to Dover’s founder Chen, was inaugurated at last year’s Heroes of Speed race meet.
Acording to the JRDC a driver can retire the trophy by winning three consecutive times over three years or have five liens whichever comes first.
Summerbell Jr has a leg up wining the race last year. Summerbell Jr will, this year, face stiff challeng from the new lap record holder, Gore, winner of the Thundersport race at the Independence of Speed race meet in August.
Not to be out shone are motor cyclists Stefan Chin, Halquin Rodney and Adrian Blake. Chin is the current lap record holder and “will be doing all he can to retain it”.
Also on the track will be challengers Peter ‘Bull’ Thompson with his newly-sprayed Mazda RX7 and Chris Campbell in his BMW “with its kinks worked out and racing at ‘break neck’ speed in practice”.
Kyle Gregg who is vying for the driver-of-the-year title will also have questions to ask of other top contenders.
Other drivers such as Tedroy Burton, Dean Shaw, George Bailey, Andre Anderson, Sebastian Rae, Heath Causwell and Peter Rae will be on the track to disrupt the competition.
Following the Heroes of Speed race meet JRDC will look forward to the final Caribbean Invasion part three, which is scheduled for November in Guyana. Summerbell Jr and Team Jamaica are in top postions for driver and country championship titles respectively. The six drivers who will travel to Barbados for that meet are Summerbell, Jr, Peter Rae, Chris Campbell, Andre Anderson, Dean Shaw and George Bailey.
