‘Charlie’, Wolmer’s for Group C rumble
THE potentially mouth-watering clash between Group C leaders Charlie Smith High and third-placed Wolmer’s Boys at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex will highlight a total of 15 rescheduled matches on today in the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/Gatorade/Digicel Manning Cup football competition.
Charlie Smith are on 25 points and are already assured of progression to the next round of the Manning Cup.
As the top team in the group, the South St Andrew-based school is also an automatic qualifier for the Walker Cup Knockout.
Only the seven group winners and the best second-placed team will advance to the KO competition.
The top two teams in each group will, however, make it to the next stage of the Manning Cup. The two best third-placed teams will also make it to the second round.
According to ISSA’s rules, the best second and third-placed teams will be determined by the average points per game.
The matches are slated to start at 3:30 pm, except the Group B double-header at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex, which will see Tivoli Gardens High taking on Papine High at 1:00 pm and Denham Town (14 points) tackling runaway leaders Hydel (25 points) at 3:00 pm.
This round of matches virtually brings the preliminary phase of the competition to a close, with just three rained-out fixtures to be honoured.
Those outstanding games, which are likely to be played later this week, will see Holy Trinity High visiting Greater Portmore High and St Catherine High in respective Group A clashes, while in Group E, St George’s College is set to travel to Edith Dalton James High.
