Czech sneaks women’s ITF crown
ROSE HALL, St James — Third seeded Katrina Kramperova of the Czech Republic yesterday upset top seed Zuzana Zlochova of Slovakia, 7-6 (7-5) 2-6 6-1, to win the second ITF women’s Futures tennis tournament at the Hilton Rose hall Hotel and Spa in Rose Hall.
Kramperova who is ranked at No 533 in the world, 140 places below Zlochova, had to dig deep to hold off the Slovakian player who despite suffering leg cramps, battled all the way in the energy sapping heat.
“Playing her in final is always tough,” Kramperova told the Sunday Observer afterwards. “I had to play good and I am really satisfied.”
She said the conditions were tough for every one and even if Zlochova who won last week’s opening tournament, was not injured she would still have a tough time against her.
They were all but even in the first set, which went to a tie-breaker, but Zlochova started suffering in the second set and had to seek attention from the physiotherapist twice and despite winning the second set easily, it was obvious she had problems moving around the court against the strong Czech player.
After the close going in the first set, Zlochova seized the advantage in the second set, winning four straight games from 1-1 to win easily.
It was Kramperova’s turn in the third and deciding set, however, and she broke the Slovak twice to wrap-up the match and tournament, earning valuable points.
Qualifying for the third in the series of four tournaments started yesterday and will end today for the start of the main draw Monday morning.
