The Spirit of Jamaica
Under-represented artists have found themselves a new cheerleader in Jamaican-born, UK-based businesswoman and philanthropist Theresa Roberts who is not only determined to raise the visibility of these artists (especially those from the Caribbean), but has also found a home away from home as it were, at the Black Circle Gallery to display the works. Funded by Roberts, the gallery’s single raison d’être is that of promoting artists from countries like Jamaica who are not-so visible in Europe.
The three-evening event launch kicked off with a private party and viewing of Black Circle Gallery’s physical show of Jamaican artists entitled ‘Spirit of Jamaica’, which ran in London during the Frieze art fair week — for Uniastrum Bank Chairman George Piskov and his wife Tanya. This was followed by an exclusive preview launch party on Tuesday, October 11 at 14 Percy Street, London. There would be more exposure for Jamaica this time as The Lord Northbrook & Dr George Piskov, chairman of Uniastrum Bank, hosted a Champagne and rum cocktail ahead of a buffet dinner with inspiration from Levi Roots for ‘The Spirit of Jamaica’ at The House of Lords, Cholmondeley Room & Terrace on Thursday, October 13. Roberts used the opportunity to promote Jamaica as a high-end tourist destination and to encourage potential investment.
SO shares exclusive highlights of the preview launch event as well as the opening of the exhibition where the works of Jamaican artists Monique Lofters, Kristina M Rowe, Laura Hamilton, Phillip Thomas and Laura Facey Cooper were on display.
