MoBay United, Lion in 0-0 stalemate
CATHERINE HALL, St James — Humble Lion moved into fourth place in the National Premier League (NPL) on Sunday evening after playing out a 0-0 draw against Montego Bay United at the Montego Bay Sports Complex, a game which saw the Brazilian Neider dos Santos take charge of the home team in his first game.
A heavy shower just before the start of the game did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of the teams, but poor finishing by both teams, and in particular, the visitors, saw them share the points.
Dos Santos is the third coach to instruct the Montego Bay United team this season after Hugh Solomon started the season before being replaced by interim coach Dr Dean Weatherly for the previous two games.
Despite having the better of the possession, especially in the second half, Humble Lion picked up their 10th point on the road, compared to two at home, the widest disparity in the league to be three points out of third place behind their Clarendon neighbours Sporting Central Academy.
The point resulted in Montego Bay United slipping back into the relegation zone on seven points, one behind fellow promoted team Highgate United and six more than last-placed Village United.
Montego Bay United had the best scoring chance in the first half, but Humble Lion’s goalkeeper Philmore Crumbie was well placed to block a powerful shot from Damion Reid at the near left post in the 40th minute.
Lenworth Hyde Jnr should have scored for Humble Lion in the 63rd minute when a brilliant build-up from the left wing opened up the Montego Bay United defence, presenting the striker with an open goal to shoot at. He, however, hesitated and gave a defender the time to recover and block his shot.
The visitors created several more chances in the game, especially late in the game when the home team adopted an ultra defensive posture by dropping all 11 players behind the ball and playing for the point.
