A year after forming a local children’s charity organisation, ‘Gramps’ Morgan, has extended his reach to sections of Africa.

The organisation — Gramps Morgan Orchestrating Miracles (GMOM) — which was formed in June of last year aims to assist less fortunate children .

“It was started with the sole intent of helping children who are finding it difficult to go to school — be it books, shoes or even pencils,” Morgan told the Observer.

Morgan — a keyboard player and vocalist of sibling band Morgan Heritage — is son of reggae artiste Denroy Morgan.

He recounted that the idea for the programme was planted after a staging of the annual St Thomas stage show — East Fest — which has now been discontinued.

Since the vision was born, his mission has taken him as far as Kenya where he said it brought him lots of joy.

“Speaking with kids, inspiring them and seeing the smiles on their faces was motivating,” he said.

After a performance in Kenya last year, Morgan donated part of his proceeds towards HIV testing, mosquito nets, malaria tablets and water purification tablets to some villages.

His most recent charity effort was a sold-out fundraiser in London on November 6.

Despite the several volunteers — for which the artiste said he is grateful to — his main challenge is finding the resources to deal with some of the needs. He also appealed to his fellow artistes to be part of the solution.

“There is room for others to be a part of the vibrant movement,” he said. “And, through music a difference can be made in the lives of others.”

“We can all make a small difference. I’m not a politician, pastor or preacher but just want to emphasise that small change can make a big difference.”
