MONTEGO BAY, St James — Grange Hill High School scored a big upset over fancied Paul Bogle High at Jarrett Park yesterday to advance to their first-ever berth in the semi-finals of the ISSA/Gatorade/Digicel daCosta Cup schoolboys’ football competition as the quarter-finals drew to a close on a day of drama.

The Westmoreland-based school scored a 1-0 win to extend their string of miraculous recoveries and joined two other western schools — early qualifiers St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) and defending champions Rusea’s High as well as Glenmuir High in the top four.

Glenmuir High, who have failed to score in their last two games, managed to qualify for the semis that will be played next week by edging yet another western school Frome Technical on goal difference despite being beaten 0-1 by STETHS.

Both teams finished tied on four points in Group One, but the Clarendon school had four goals for and two against while Frome had four goals for and three against.

Brian Brown continued to pile on the goals as he scored twice in Rusea’s 5-1 win over Petersfield, while Frome beat Cedric Titus 4-1 at Frome.

Brown has now drawn level with Glenmuir’s Noel Johnson on 10 goals since the start of the Inter-zone round.

Saturday’s semi-finals will see Rusea’s, who won Group Two taking on Group One runners up Glenmuir High, while STETHS, winners in Group One, will face Grange Hill.

Grange Hill had seemed out of the reckoning in the Inter-zone round before squeezing through ahead of Manchester High and Lennon High by beating Munro College 4-1 and Lennon edging Manchester.

On Wednesday, they came back from a goal down to beat Petersfield 2-1 at Frome after losing their first game in the Inter-zone to Rusea’s to give themselves a chance then made the best of that chance yesterday by edging Paul Bogle High 1-0, thanks to a wonderfully improvised goal in the second half.

Orvest Hewling chased a ball to the right flag, then with his back to the goal and from an acute angle, kicked the ball over his head, only to see it take a wicked turn, bounced in front of goalkeeper Danon Atkinson who was distracted by another Petersfield player and allowed the ball to get by him and into the roof of the goal.

Paul Bogle have yet to score a goal at Jarrett Park after three games since last year.

In the second game of the Jarrett Park double-header, Petersfield who were eliminated form semi-final contention earlier, made Rusea’s work hard as they held the champions to a 1-1 score up to 65 minutes before a defensive error allowed Rusea’s to go 2-1 up then scored three more times in the space of 14 minutes.

After some dogged defending by Petersfield, Rusea’s took the lead after 23 minutes when Brown chipped left-footed over the defence and past goalkeeper Stevon Vernon.

Omar Daley brought the stubborn Petersfield back level in the 49th minute when he finished off a brilliant move down the right, exposed the Rusea’s defence before booting past goalkeeper Richard Trench to snap a seven games stretch in the daCosta Cup since they conceded a goal dating back to October 8, when they beat Frome 4-1 in a Zone B return-round game in Lucea.

It was also the third goal that Rusea’s were conceding in the daCosta Cup this season.

At Santa Cruz, STETHS sent warning they will not be easily beaten as Jamel Sinclair’s second-half goal gave them a perfect win record in the quarter-finals, edging Glenmuir 1-0.
