Nyabinghi cops Trainers’ Trophy race at Caymanas Park
After bringing Nyabinghi to a boil entering the final 400 metres, jockey Winston Griffiths then unleashed the filly with less than 60 metres remaining to gallop out of a crowded pack with cocky certainty to win the $715,000 United Racehorse Trainers’ Association Trophy feature at Caymanas Park yesterday.
Owned by Miss Suckie and installed the 1-2 favourite in the Restricted Stakes event for imported three-year-olds upward (NW3 and maidens) and native-bred three-year-olds, Nyabinghi ran 1,820 metres in 1:58 to beat the 9-2 shot Lady Macbeth, a four-year-old American filly by three lengths ridden by Omar Walker .
Alexa’s Song, an American five-year-old mare, was third ridden by Paul Francis at odds of 7-2, with Dontsayaword, a dark bay three-year-old filly ridden by leading jockey Dick Cardenas, completing the frame as a 5-1 bet in the field of seven. A field of eight was originally declared but Jovoun The Master was a late non-starter.
“I was easy all the way”, said Griffiths afterwards. “I was never in any danger so I just rode a normal race and get the job done.”
It was the second win from three starts over the distance and trainer Peter McMaster was pleased with the performance. “She is an improving three-year-old filly who will enjoy a distance of ground and I expect that she will get better with time.”
Leaving Gate Five after the starter sent them on their way, Griffiths held Nyabinghi in mid-pact but took closer orders approaching the 800 metre-pole as the three-year-old bay gelding Madura Gold, ridden by Aaron Chatrie, took the field along with Alexa’s Song keeping company on the rails.
Entering the 700-metre pole, Griffiths made a sharp move on the leaders, but Madura Gold was still resolute to bring them off the home turn with Nyabinghi on his heels. At this point, Walker was seen making a pointed move on the outside to make it a threesome entering the home stretch.
Just before entering the final 50 metres, Griffith asked his mount for a final effort and the American filly responded with an effort that could not be matched by her rivals as she motored forward for her second win of the season from 12 starts.
A three-year-old filly by Halo’s Image out of Dixieland Gulch (Gulch) bred by Bridlewood Farm in the USA, Nyabinghi was winning for the third time from 12 career starts and earned $390,400 as the winner’s share for earnings of $797,300 lifetime.
