Jamaicans on their 2012 career goals
WE are just over a week into the new year and as part of their resolutions, many are focussed on career progress. Career & Education write Ainsworth Morris took to the streets this past week to ask Jamaicans: ‘What is your career goal for 2012 and how do you intend on achieving it?’
Melissa Robinson, 27, pump attendant/customer service rep
“Right now I am employed as a pump attendant, but I have a dream. I want to become a nurse or start the journey to becoming a nurse this year. I will do this by going back to school later this year.”
Michelle, teacher by profession
“I want to go back into teaching, but there are no jobs available right now for me in that field. I just completed a degree and I am just going to keep working where I am now until I get something that I want.”
Dane Hinds, 26, collections officer
“I am presently working as a collections officer at a financial institution. I am in the process of doing a degree in management information system. In a year and a half, that will be completed. So my career goal for 2012 is to work on that degree.”
Yashorna Guy, 23, accounts clerk
“I want to be the new host for the television show Intense on TVJ. I’ll be going to the audition and I hope I’ll do well and become selected. I currently do accounts work and personal loan posting at a financial institution. Hopefully for 2012, I will get a career change and go into media.”
Jermaine Jarrett, 20, student
“My career goal is to get a steady job and to be more cash-conservative and try to do a lot with what I have. I plan to go to college overseas. I finished HEART Trust/NTA with computer repairs level II certification and for 2012, I want to do something in programming or web designing and computer repairs and programming overseas.”
Cadiella Chisholm, 18, student
“I want to become a registered nurse. I just completed high school and I want to go to college to start my nursing degree. I’ll be doing less partying and more saving towards that.”
Casey Lawrence, counter clerk at Tastee
“I want to achieve a lot of things for 2012 with my career. I want to become a soldier. I want to apply to the Jamaica Defence Force, get selected and start training this year hopefully. I like the job of being a soldier. Soldiers look out for the young people and the elders and they protect them. I want to have a job like that.”
