Norwich salvage draw in Portland Western Union Major league
Snow Hill — Norwich Community Club had to come from behind to salvage a 1-1 draw with Snow Hill Community Club at Snow Hill in Sunday’s game of the Portland Western Union Major League first-round ‘border clash’.
Edward Lewis gave Snow Hill the lead in the 49th minute, but Jerry Foster earned Norwich a share of the spoils in the 92nd minute.
The game between the bordering communities was keenly contested as Snow Hill gained the upper hand in the first half with Michael Deans, Lewis, Richard Scott making raids on the Norwich defence.
Norwich countered through Jermaine Reid, Leroy Dixon and Fitzroy Briscoe, but they couldn’t find a way past the Snow Hill backline.
Snow Hill picked up where they left off in the second half and were duly rewarded in the 49th minute when Deans relayed a pass down the left flank to Denton Burke, who moved into the penalty area and was brought down by Charles Henry. Referee Hugh Rankine, who was in full view of the play, pointed to the penalty spot and cautioned Henry.
Lewis dislodged his spot kick to the left of goalkeeper Aldex Bradshaw to put his team ahead.
Norwich equalised two minutes into added time when Foster benefitted from the referee’s advantage play to fire the ball below goalkeeper Roy Davis.
In other first-round games, relegated St George’s, with a brace from Jason Malcolm, defeated Taurus 5-0; Dellon White’s brace led Buff Bay to a 4-0 win over Progressive; Manchioneal and Eagle Strikers went by Hope Bay and Ujama, 2-0, respectively.
The second round of games will be this weekend. On Saturday Taurus host Snow Hill at Carder Park; Hope Bay host Buff Bay at Canewood and Ujama take on St George’s at Hector’s River, while on Sunday Norwich will seek their first win when they host Manchioneal at CASE, and Progressive entertain Eagle Strikers at Boundbrook Pavilion.
