CHAMPIONS of Motorsports in Jamaica gathered in the second city recently to celebrate a successful 2011 at the annual Jamaica Millenium Motoring Club (JMMC) awards ceremony at the Wexford Court Hotel in Montego Bay.

The prize-giving ceremony saw rallysport, sprint and dexterity giants being recognized for the year’s outstanding achievements overall and in their individual classes.

“Motor sport in Jamaica is on the rise and is making a growing contribution not only to the island’s sports-tourism product but to the local economies of the various cities, towns and villages that the events visit across the island,” said Dean Corrodus, chairman of the JMMC.

Among the 2011 JMMC Rallysport Drivers Champions are Kyle Gregg in first place, Matthew Gore in second place and Maurice Whittingham in third.

For the Overall Sprint Championship Gregg took the lead once again with Whittingham in second followed by Gore.

Gregg also walked away with the second-wheel drive sprint championship, with Whittingham in second place and Jordan Powell taking the third place trophy.

Whittingham took home the title of Overall Dexterity Champion with Randall Singh being first runner up followed by Christopher McFarlane.

“I’m still astonished by my victory,” said 22-year-old Kyle ‘Speedy’ Gregg. “This is the first time in Jamaica’s history that someone has won both the Jamaica Rallysport Drivers Championship and the Dover Championship at the same time. It’s an amazing feeling. I started off the year at the top of my game and once I realised I could actually win the championship I made up my mind to continue right through,” he continued.

Gregg, who got his start in go-karting, has been competing since 2005 and plans to make bigger and better strides in 2012. With the JMMC’s plans to continue the growth and development of each genre of motor sports in Jamaica by spreading its activities through each of the island’s 14 parishes, 2012 holds much in store for the sport.
