RSVP: Inviting the ‘In Crowd’

Style Observer

Shortlisting invites for your next social do can be as stressful as finding the perfect dress. Who are those truly worth knowing? The ones with power and prestige, the ‘it’ factor and the ‘wow’ charm, old money, new money and yes, broke-but-still fab. The ones rarely seen out; the ones we see all the time, but still can’t get enough of…let’s get this party started as SO lends a hand and breaks down the 100 + Most Invited — in other words, the people who need to be seen at your party.

Portia Simpson Miller

Sidle up to the new prime minister (if you can get past her security detail) and diplomatically press for details on just how one goes about making a triumphant return. Inviting Simpson Miller and getting her to attend bodes well for you as it shows access to the seat of power.

Christopher and Kimberly Issa

He’s a model businessman and his other half, a still gorgeous ex-model and TV host. Pick up valuable business know-how from him and beauty and fashion insider tips from her.

Pat Ramsay

If you’re looking for a link to Oprah, forget six degrees of separation, Pat Ramsay has shared company with the Big O. The diminutive Ramsay — UTech’s arts and culture director — also has enviable art connections on BB if you’re interested in talking or securing art.

United States Ambassador Pamela E Bridgewater

It doesn’t hurt having the ever-charming Bridgewater put in an appearance at your do. She is your one step closer to Obama and adept at great conversation, too.

Spanish Ambassador Celsa Nuno & Alex Crowther

Civility and an easy mirth are hallmarks of Spanish Ambassador Celsa Nuno; her hubby Alex Crowther is a gregarious presence and is known to break out his dancing shoes when he fancies a particular tune.

Christelle Harris

A third-generation member of the Hussey clan, Harris is the marketing head of her family’s Rum Fire business. The sassy Harris is a good bet for ensuring a lively presence at your do.

Robert Pickersgill

In the style department, preening politico Pickersgill is always a sharply dressed gent. No matter your party’s dress code, he’s sure to turn up an ace of spades.

Anthony Miller

Miller is sadly missed for his truthful sarcasms on Digicel’s Rising Stars but he doesn’t have to be MIA from your party. For smart, witty convo, no one does it better and your shindig just might make it on TV’s Entertainment Report.

Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart

A self-made mogul and one of The Rock’s most eminent business boldfaces, watch the room at your party sway in Butch’s direction as guests make subtle overtures for a ride on the private jet or helicopter, discounts on Jaguars and Range Rovers, or stays at his luxe Sandals properties.

Christopher & Nadeane Tufton

There are those who still feel that had Tufton been given the baton of the chosen one by the Jamaica Labour Party, the JLP might not have stumbled as badly at the polls. While we’ll never know for sure, what is certain is that he’s very much in demand by job hunters and wife Nadeane is a feather in his cap — always chic and never one to upstage hubby.

Storm Saulter

Storm is sort of The Rock’s answer to Hollywood’s Tarantino, and his cinematic ambitions — including that White Witch of Rose Hall film and a possible Jamaican-themed superhero (or heroine) — are sure to make for artsy dinner-table talk.

Tom and Rose Tavares-Finson

Besides the pair’s coordinated fashion sense sure to inspire nods of approval or bad-minded seething, you would definitely want them to RSVP your next soirée; if only to inveigle Tom to spill ‘Gaza tales’ about client Vybz Kartel.

Chris Berry & Dr Patricia Yap

As Mayberry Investments head honcho, Berry is one of The Rock’s influential financial power brokers. Add dermatologist wife Yap — set to franchise her Apex Acne Club across the island — to the equation and your guest list is starting to look good.

Chris Reckord

Our resident ‘wine guy’ is a true party animal and the perfect guest to move people to the dancefloor at your party. We still have vivid memories of Reckord rocking out to the beats of Euro house music at last year’s Global Party and all eyes being on him. And oh yeah, he may know a little something about fine wines.

Christina Benjamin & Simon Samuel

College Lifestyle host, documentarian, and singer Christina Benjamin and her musician beau Simon Samuel (of the Blu Grass In The Sky band) nicely fit the FPF — “fresh, pretty, and fab” — bill on the guest list.

PJ Patterson

Percival James Patterson might very well have taken a page from Madonna’s reinvention playbook. The former prime minister revealed PJ Version 2.0 — the savvy behind-the-curtains guru, waging a mighty comeback for his political party. You can quizz him over cocktails on that career makeover.

Josef Forstmayr

As managing director of Round Hill Hotel & Villas, the Rock’s luxe getaway for jet-setting international celebs, Forstmayr knows a thing or two about brushing shoulders with real A-listers. Pencil him onto your invite list and watch guests swarm him for deets on Lauren, McCartney, Bündchen, Brady, Gosling or McGregor…his styling is worth getting tips on, too.

Lisa Hanna & Richard Lake

Hanna’s a brainy beauty and the ultimate party double whammy: perfect eye candy to have the men gawk at and stimulated by her introspective thoughts at the same time. Her companion Lake’s shrewd entrepreneurial savvy guarantees you construction business insight.

Tshani Jaja

Jaja — a Digicel senior exec — is as much a style influencer as she is smart and sassy. Who can argue with those qualities when your guest list needs to be anything but ordinary?

Brian & Keneea Linton George

The plus side: Supreme Ventures CEO Brian George is affable and an easy fit in any company; wife Keenea’s TV show, Mission Catwalk, is uber-hot and a great conversation piece for juicy behind-the-scenes action (and early news on whose designs you need to know about). The down side: there’s none we can fathom.

Tina & Gary Matalon

A more genuinely warm couple you’ll be hard-pressed to find. Gary’s prankster personality and Tina’s effervescence make for a winning combo and the right injection of fun personalities to your guest list.

Anup & Bina Chandiram

If diamonds are a girl’s best friend, then word to the wise — make the ever-so-delightful Bijoux director Anup Chadiram and wife Bina BlackBerry messenger contacts ASAP. How else will you know when the latest baubles make it to The Rock?

Dr DK and Beverley Anderson-Duncan

The newl-ywed Duncans are the ‘it’ couple of the moment. Having them at your ‘do’ ensures lots of cameras will be clicking. They’re also great for regaling guests with how-to tales on making a long-term romance work.

Edward & Carla Seaga

The former prime minister, current University of Technology chancellor and best-selling author is a living encyclopedia on Jamaican politics and refreshingly opinionated. He’s sure to attract a fair share of attention among hobnobbing guests; while wife Carla remains always the epitome of polite grace.

Marsha Smikle

If you want that can-do, inspiring, entrepreneurial new blood to add colour at your event, Smikle is your lady. She can wow guests explaining how she launched her Delivery Solutions business in the midst of the recession and made it a success.

Sean Paul Henriques & Jodi Stewart

The couple is good for upping the star wattage on your guest list. Nicely pester Jodi about the wedding date and Sean about why he has more wardrobe space at home than his long-time belle.

Kerry-Ann Clarke

As a go-to gal of style, Clarke is on speed dial for many of the city’s fabulocrats. She can spare ladies the embarrassment of wearing the same outfit to the same party as she can clue you in as to who already bought what.

Kenny Benjamin

As if being a titan of industry was not enough, Benjamin is known for posh parties at his Stony Hill manor and he’s leading the charge to revamp the Hope Zoo; all of which make for interesting convo among black-tie or casually clad guests when Benjamin RSVPs to the invitation for your do.

Greg Christie

With unquestionable integrity as his calling card, Christie is a man who can make both corporate and public sector officials secretly tremble in their shoes. Having the contractor general at your party is a boon for you — since he’s unlikely to fraternise with, dare we suggest, the shady variety.

Jennifer Messado

She’s already a live-wire, but Messado is this year’s must-have addition to your party as everyone will make a beeline to her to find out what it’s like to stare down a gunman on the streets of upper St Andrew and live to tell the tale.

Jean Anderson Wright

Seventy-year-old Anderson Wright can show ladies half her age how to party. Trust us, we’ve seen her work not only a room but command the dance floor.

Dylan Coke & Janelle Pantry

After dancing up a storm at the party, mosey on over to décor maven Janelle Pantry of Spaces for home design tips while her beau Dylan Coke, assistant VP at NCB Capital Markets, can comfortably talk investment options with you.

Lisa McMaster & Clifford Phipps

Lisa McMaster and hubby Clifford Phipps are the young couple you’ll want to fill that ‘buppie-cool’ slot when you’re trying to figure out who should sit where at the dinner table.

Tamika West and Trishauna Kirlew

From the platinum bar at the recent Shaggy & Friends concert to every major all-inclusive party worth being seen at, West and Kirlew are the very visible premium beverage ambassadors of Caribbean Producers of Jamaica. Knowing these two helps making the drink selection menu for your party that more luxe.

Gregory Dalton-Brown & Emma Sharp Dalton-Brown

Emma is a chef and hostess par excellence, so trust us when we say a dinner party invitation to her and hubby Gregory’s Jacks Hill home is a keeper. Inviting them to your shindig may boomerang in your favour.

Michael & Thalia Lyn

Thalia loves a good do, and isn’t shy about getting down whenever the DJ throws on soca tunes; while retired airline captain Michael Lyn is good for a convo with the boys and can always be depended on to have a trusty stogie nearby.

Sophia Max Brown

Max Brown epitomises fab and is sure to stir whispers among guests at your party but isn’t shy about offering style tips to both gents and gals who want to look better when they do their next party.

Cecile Levee

Thinking you’ll be hearing crickets given the ho-hum guest list you’ve just finalised? Need an injection of a super-fun personality? Cecile Levee is your woman. She owns every room she saunters in; nothing is off-limits in convo; and her infectious persona will make even the dullest person seem remotely engaging. Enough said.

Stephen & Imani Price

With her being a newly appointed senator and he, a senior LIME exec and party promoter, we’re sure talk can easily bob and weave between the state of politics, business, and what’s hot on the nightlife scene.

Wayne Marshall & Tami Chynn

He’s one of dancehall music’s more intelligent faces; she’s his super-gorgeous songstress wife and sometimes-duet partner. Over bites of finger food, they are a great couple to prod to learn what the young people are into these days.

Kevin Hendrickson

The hotel magnate’s acquisition of the Jamaica Pegasus makes him the owner of the most hotel rooms in the capital city. It’s a factoid worth knowing when an influx of family and friends from overseas need accommodation. Be sure to get his business card at a social with his cell, or brother Butch’s (written on the back) so making last-minute reservations will be less worrisome.

Adam & Jill Stewart

Herir-apparent of the ATL Group, Adam Stewart revved up the auto division with state-of-the-art makeovers and luxe rides; and made sweeping upgrades to the Sandals properties. With Adam’s fab wife Jill often out by his side, try picking his brain by striking up a convo at the party. Important lessons like raising the bar and becoming the bar could be learnt.

Peter Bunting & Mark Golding

Peter Bunting and Mark Golding share a long history together, dating back to establishing the finance company DB&G, with Chris Dehring in the 1990s. Two decades later, Bunting — the new security minister — and Golding — newly appointed justice minister — are prized names to have in your phone contacts.

Chris Dehring

The LIME chairman has led the charge of the company aggressively repositioning itself as a viable option. Is 2012 the year that LIME will take a bigger bite out of the lucrative telecommunications pie? Invite new daddy Dehring to your do and watch guests line up to put the question to him.

India Crotty

The Belizean-born, Rock-working blonde is the Montego Bay-based charmer employed to Caribbean Producers of Jamaica. Bold and brassy (with the requisite tact), Crotty is the perfect antidote for the stiffs that may dull your do.

Annmarie Vaz

Hubby Daryl may have lost his office space at Jamaica House but his darling wife Annmarie is still sure to make heads turn.

Ian & Brenda Wong

Age is just a number for Coldfield Manufacturing boss Ian Wong. He’s hip enough to be spotted at the trendiest socials (sometimes looking years younger, thanks to his ensembles) while his wife Brenda oozes refined elegance as the matriarch of the Wong clan.

Jaime and Mark McConnell

Besides expecting a third visit from the stork, the power couple has another baby — their just-launched natural juice line Orijin. See if they’ll oblige you, between forkfuls of dessert, and share details on how to venture into the manufacturing biz.

Bruce & Suzanne Bowen

He’s amiable and runs one of the country’s largest financial institutions; she’s his reservedly glamourpuss wife. It’s good social networking (and business) having Bruce and Suzanne at your shindig.

Paula Kerr-Jarrett

Kerr-Jarrett may not have won the Eastern Hanover constituency on the JLP ticket, but the lawyer and philanthropist remains a must-have addition on guest lists on the ever-so-fickle social scene.

Mark Croskery & Kibebi Johnston

Lovebirds Mark Croskery and Kibebi Johnston are fab, cute and well-to-do. Croskery is the man behind Stocks and Securities Limited; Johnston, the woman who heads BarCode. Together they are a power couple; at your soirée, the ones people will be hitting up for financial advice and party rental services.

Lloyd & Sonia Tomlinson

Lloyd is the chairman of Blue Mahoe Estate and Sonia, the chairperson of the education committee of the International Proxy Parents. The winsome pair will add mature sophistication to your do.

Tamara Scott Williams

The fiercely intellectual Scott Williams is your go-to lady if you’re anticipating guests who will be springing enquiries about the pulse of The Rock’s art world.

Krystal Chong

Chong, Honey Bun’s marketing manager, is perpetually bubbly, always dressed to the nines, and a looker. A perfect trifecta, if you ask us, for the ideal party guest.

Mark Linehan

We’d rephrase the ‘luck o’ the Irish’ to the ‘charm o’ Linehan’ for the rugby-loving Digicel CEO. His firm handshakes are equalled by his genuine nature.

Steve & Betty Ashley

Well regarded for their own entertaining skills, Steve, newly appointed chairman of the National Solid Waste Management Authority, and his much-requested ‘orchid doctor’ wife Betty, are sure to add wattage to your event.

Harold Brady

It’s almost two years since Dudus-gate. Perhaps Brady could tell more about what happened in Washington if you made enquiries over sips of the party’s signature drink. He might not think you daft to ask!

Colin Hylton

The ace Guilt Trip chef is as much a colourful character as he is erudite. He can seamlessly switch convo from gourmet cuisine to Time magazine’s latest cover story.

Melanie Schwapp

Schwapp makes the cut for being The Rock’s novelist du jour. High society is devouring the pages of her ‘it’ novel Dew Angels so you want her at your party for literary inspiration.

Roxanne Shields

That chic updo or three-toned highlights you saw city girl fabulocrats rocking may well be the handiwork of stylist-to-those-in-the-know Roxanne Shields. Ensure she RSVPs to your social and the ladies in attendance will thank you for the heads up.

Nevada Powe

Powe is a well-travelled bon vivant whose clever observations and uncanny witticisms are almost assured favour among the intelligentsia at your party.

Grace Silvera

There’s a dignified air about Silvera and an instantly likeable personality we’ve always adored. The grouchiest of guests will be subdued by the LIME senior exec’s endearing smile. Endeavour to be as charming as she to make inroads with her company.

Julian Robinson

The former IBM UK management consultant-turned-new state minister in the mining, energy and information communication technology ministry is whipsmart, well-mannered and employed in a buzzworthy position. Makes sense for you to cosy up, wouldn’t you say?

Racquel Jenkins Moss-Solomon

If only to see what ultra-fab ensemble she’ll don for your party, Racquel Jenkins Moss-Solomon is a guest worth inviting. It helps too, that her Permanent Cosmetics business is a hot spot for fashionistas.

Phil & Erroleen Powell

Career diplomat Phil Powell and Louis Vuitton-loving wife Erroleen are the fun couple you need at your party. She’s a certified fashionplate who will dance the night away and he’s adept at thought-provoking convo.

Peter & Nicola Melhado

Mechanical engineer and former banker Peter Melhado and his lovely wife Nicola have made the American International School of Kingston the A-list school for the children of the who’s who. Warm up to them at the buffet table and see if you can get your kids in. Scholarships are now available.

Marvin & Sarah Hsia Hall

Jot down innovative educator Marvin Hall and his intellectual property lawyer wife Sarah as two names to add to the mix of guests. There’s loads of new-age insight they will bring to the table.

Paul & Marie Smith

Face Place boss Marie Simone Hall Smith and businessman hubby Paul Smith are an absolutely charming pair who will leave guests impressed with their quiet confidence.

Odette Dixon Neath

Dixon Neath, a super-talented scribe and PR whiz, is most certain to offer up party-perfect zingers your guests will relish.

Shelly Curran

Digicel senior exec by day, the ultimate party girl off the clock, Curran is the lady you’ll see sipping cocktails and having a ball. Being an events sponsorship manager also means you should also ‘curry favour’ if you’re looking to have your event endorsed.

Suzanne Rousseau

The one-half of Ciao Bella caterers with sis Michelle, Suzanne Rousseau — last spotted ushering in 2012 with Kate Moss and Grace Jones — has picked up where she left off a decade ago as a bonafide fashion insider with serious creds to boot. Suzanne brought acclaimed international designer Nandini Mariwala Savin for a well-attended trunk show. Befriend her at the next party to be on the inside track as to who she’ll next be hosting on The Rock.Arnella & Alexisse Chin

Sisters Arnella and Alexisse are heirs to dad Xavier Chin’s Track Price Plus empire. The two might be petite in stature but big on fervour. Just the type of youthful exuberance to up the tempo at your shindig.

Richard & Diane Stewart

Stewart Motors directors Richard and Diane Stewart are perennial invitees at all the dos to be seen at; hence, why they should be added to your list.

Tara Playfair Scott

As LIME’s head of promotions and events, Tara Playfair-Scott works hard and plays even harder. Plus, she just might be squired to your party on the arm of a certain Hollywood actor.

Vivienne Bayley Hay

When the occasion calls for it, Bayley Hay transforms into va-va-voom Vivienne. The VMBS VP is also the guest others will want to schmooze to get inside info about taking out mortgages.

Vincent Chang

The Tastee founder pioneered the template and later Jamaican fast-food franchises would follow. A man with a big heart, he never toots his horn (so we will) about his many philanthropic deeds. Not one to do the social scene much, if he RSVPs, corner him at a party and learn life lessons in humility.

Gregory & Michelle Mayne

Having launched his own realty company this year, and she being a director of her family’s ever-expanding Restaurants of Jamaica business, talk of real estate and commerce should come easy for Greg and Michelle. That aside, they’re fun people to have around.

Gulu & Veena Chanrai

He, a celebrated industrialist and she, his elegant wife who always wears a smile just as she does designer threads. Veena, a darling of diamonds, frequents her family’s Bijoux…naturally, their attendance at a fab do means there’s lots of convo about karats, uber-chic collections and fab destinations.

PB & Jennifer Scott

Mussons boss PB Scott and his wife Jennifer aren’t among the “socially spent” (interpret that to mean those who’ve lost their currency) and so you’ll catch them at only the most luxe of events. Clearly, it means if they’re at your party, it’s definitely the hottest ticket in the city.

Yoni & Lisa Epstein

Lose weight (check), marry dream girl (check), be part of the ATL Group’s Unbeatable team (check)…like duh! Yoni is poised to have a great year, so too will his belle Lisa, The Branson Centre’s chief development director as they enjoy being special guests at the most coveted parties.

Michael & Melanie Subratie

Honorary Consul of Bangladesh, managing director of T Geddes Grant, Jamaica Observer Food Awards judge, father and bon vivant certainly make Michael Subratie interesting. Add to that his bright-eyed, business savvy, genteel wife Melanie, whose heart melts at the thought of philanthropy and you’re in for hours of meaningful convo.

Andrew & Debbie Issa

Coldwell Banker Realtor and KUYA magazine publisher Andrew Issa has ‘inside’ access to the best buys when it comes to properties, so it doesn’t hurt to send him an invite. What’s more, his boutique-owning wife Debbie (think Changes, June Plum) can dress both you and your fab tweens up for the affair!

Roger Grant

Scotia’s Private Client Group financial consultant Roger Grant understands what it means to network (or should that be net worth?)…from Gordon Tewani’s intimate birthday dinner party, to Bijoux to Barrington Watson’s Retrospective at the National Gallery, he’s there!

Christian Tavares-Finson

Direct access to the Worl’ Boss and dashing good looks make Christian Tavares -Finson simply intriguing… paw jokes aside!

Michele English

Blond, bubbly and completely down with the ‘Flow’ (get it?) the telecoms boss is a must-have at any event…hey, maybe she might even persuade Flow poster boy Konshens to make a special guest appearance.

Jon Baker

He calls the idyllic GeeJam home (think owner of all I survey) and those in-the-know, know it’s the playground of the rich and fab…plus, he’s got all the deets on the late British jazz bird Amy Winehouse since she cut a couple tracks there.

Jackie Lechler

Mum Diana Stewart is a darling and dad Richard is charmer…so naturally, Jackie Stewart Lechler is the kind of socialite who sets the example for all others. She’s a petite dynamo who loves a good time, both on and off the dance floor and it doesn’t hurt, too, that she’s got access to those hot rides!

David Hall

This former Digicel exec-turned-businessman has added first world sophistication to the island’s two major airports with his Club Kingston and Club MoBay lounges in the Norman Manley International and Sangster International airports, respectively. Have him at your do and you’re one step closer to “access granted”.

Michael Cushnie

He’s the young Mission Catwalk Season 2 director and editor who’s on the up. Chat with him and you’ll realise that he’s got a fresh take and is always receptive to a new idea.
