JAMAICA’S ace sprinter Veronica Campbell Brown who hopes to become the first woman to win three successive Olympic 200m titles this year, has given host city London the thumbs-up in terms of preparation for the global event.

“Often you hear horror stories of a mad rush by host countries to get the facilities ready, but London seems to be on track,” she wrote in her on-line diary on the IAAF website this month.

Campbell Brown, who had a busy January, travelling between Jamaica, London and New York where she opened her competitive schedule, was in the English capital for promotional work with her main sponsor, adidas. She said she was impressed with what she had seen in London.

While enjoying what she described as “unusually mild and exciting” temperatures, Campbell Brown got a sneak preview of the main stadium where she hopes she will compete in both 100m and 200m finals on August 4 and 8, respectively.

“I got a chance to see the main stadium and other competition venues as well as the Olympic Village on a bus tour through Olympic Park.

“I also visited Westfield mall, which is walking distance away from the Olympic Park. I got the opportunity to meet, sign autograph and take pictures with some of the youngsters who will serve as volunteers during the Games,” she said.

Campbell Brown opened her season by winning her first ever 50m race at Madison Square Gardens on January 28, a week after she won the RJR Sports Foundation’s Sports Woman of the Year award for the 2011 season.

She reported that while here in January, she presented the third of four scholarship recipients from the Veronica Campbell Brown Foundation, Terry-Shanice Matthias at St Andrew Technical High in Kingston.

“I felt so privileged that I was able to not just put a smile on her face, but to also meet her appreciative mother,” she said.
