Where was the Jamaican flag?
ONE thing we won’t see from Jamaica’s two medallists at the IAAF World Indoor Championships which ended yesterday in Istanbul, Turkey, are photos of them running around the track waving the Jamaican flag.
While other medallists were seen with their national flags waving or wrapped around them, repeat 60m champion Veronica Campbell Brown and men’s 60m silver medallist Nesta Carter were left to wave to the fans and celebrate with broad smiles as the Jamaican delegation arrived in Turkey without a flag.
A source at the championships said both Campbell Brown and Carter waited for a flag to be handed to them, but in the end had to do without one while the other medal winners in their races had their national standard handed to them, in some cases, more than one.
Normally at regional or global championships, team officials travel with flags in the anticipation of victory laps.
Sometimes fans in the stands throw a flag to the athletes to celebrate their national pride.
Except for the two occasions that the Jamaicans stood on the podium and the flag was raised by the IAAF officials, the Jamaican flag was, however, missing in Istanbul last weekend.
