Calabar clinch Surrey U-16 schools title
CALABAR added the Surrey County Under-16 Rugby League High School Championship title to their Under-19 crown when they bested St George’s College, 20-16, at Campion College on Tuesday.
Rushane Taylor weaved past three defenders after only one minute to put the Georgians up 3-0.
Calabar responded on their next possession when Oliver Smith levelled the game.
In a tit-for-tat, St George’s pressed the attack for prop forward Odane Taylor to rush over the line for the North Street-based team to lead by four points.
Close to half time, Calabar skipper Adolph Gayle cut loose to score in the left corner and tie up the game 8-8 at the break.
In the second half Calabar put their foot down, using their pacy players to run from dummy-half which put out George’s and allowed the green-and-black clad team to fire in two quick tries from light-footed Shashawny Smith.
With only three minutes to go, Jevaun Brown pulled out a double to put St George’s again on even terms and send the game into sudden death extra-time.
St Georges, who got the first opportunity to attack, completed their set of six and turned the ball over to Calabar who immediately attacked the left flank with the speedy Smith.
His pace forced the Georgians to use up many defenders on the left flank which enabled Calabar to swing the ball to the right where they found second row David Gutzmer who darted over the try line to send his team into ecstatic celebrations.
