A: Dear Suzanne:
You are less likely to lose your Phalaenopsis when you plant it on tree fern bark. The only drawback is that you will have to water everyday unless rain falls, and you cannot put it inside your house.
Q: Dear Doc:
Each time my Epidendrums are about to bloom the buds just get black and then dry up. Can you tell me what is happening?
Flo
A: Dear Flo:
In Jamaica, Epidendrums are known to attract thrips and mites, epecially if you have lots of other plants around. Your Epidendrums seem to be suffering from a thrip problem. Please soak the bud when you are spraying, especially from avery early stage, with caprid, dimeathoate (very strong smell) or newmectin. Spray once per week during the cooler times of day for at least four weeks to get rid of the pest. Once this course of treatment is complete, you can return to your twice-per-month spraying.
