CALABAR High School’s first-year Class Two athlete Michael O’Hara and Edwin Allen’s thrower Danniel Thomas were named the Boys and Girls champion athletes after Saturday’s end of the 102nd ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships at the National Stadium.

Thomas, who won two gold medals while setting a new record in the shot put Open, scored 25 points to beat Alpha’s Kimberly Williams, while O’Hara scored 24 points also from two wins and a third place finish.

O’Hara upset Jamaica College’s red-hot favourite Rohan Walker in the 200m after taking the bronze in the 100m on Friday, then won the 110m hurdles event.

Thomas, who transferred from Frome Technical two years ago, lost her Class One discus throw title to teammate Tara-sue Barnett in an epic battle on Wednesday where both broke the old record repeatedly, then smashed the shot put Open record with a 14.47m effort before winning the javelin throw on Saturday with 40.74m, improving on her third place from last year as defending champion Kellion Knibb of St Jago finished third.

Three Class One boys — Munro College’s sprint double champion Delano Williams, Kingston College’s Sanj D Powell and Calabar’s throws double winner Fedrick Dacres — were tied on 18 points each.

O’Hara’s teammate Shamar Kison finished second in Class Two with 16 points, while Wolmer’s’ Raheem Robinson had 15, while in Class Three St Jago’s Raheem Chambers and Kingston College’s Sammawi Welington had 18 points and Calabar’s Chevnne Hamilton scored 16 points.

Golding accumulated 22 points to place second behind Thomas in the girls Class One, while Edwin Allen’s Desreen Montaque was third with 21 points.

Three members of the Edwin Allen team finished in the top three in Class Two — Marleena Eubanks won with 20 points, Danniel Thomas was second with 18 and Heptathlon winner Rashema Briscoe scored 17 points.

Wolmer’s Girls’ Shauna Helps, who retained her Class Three sprint double while breaking the 100m record with 11.50 seconds, tied with Hydel’s Samara Spencer who won the high and long jump gold medals and Papine’s Tiffany James who won the 400m/800m double, all scoring 18 points.

Manchester High’s Sidney Marshall topped the girls Class Four with 16 points after winning the 200m and placing fourth in the 100m; Edwin Allen’s Shellece Clarke was a point behind followed by Hydel’s Osheca Barnes and Aaliyah Hopkins of Edwin Allen tied with 14 each.
