Frazsiers Whip coach unfazed by win
DESPITE their dominance and a deserved 2-0 win over Christian Pen in Thursday’s first-leg semi-final of the LIME/St Catherine FA Major League, Frazsiers Whip coach Rayon Gordon was not overwhelmed.
“Well, we have to give God thanks to have a 2-0 lead, but I’m not so pleased with the playing of the team. I don’t know if it was the conditions… but when a field is wet you have to change the pace of play. So the type of ball you pass to each other has to be a little bit slower than expected,” said Gordon.
Frazsiers Whip’s win means they only need to avoid defeat in the return-leg next Thursday to reach the finals.
In Thursday’s victory, Alton Brown and Alanzo Brown scored on either side of the break for a deserved victory at the Spanish Town, Prison Oval, the venue for the return showdown.
Should they win, they will either face Rodwood or DB Basovak after both teams played to a 1-1 draw in the curtain-raiser.
Despite their two-goal cushion, Gordon said Frazsiers Whip will be on the offensive.
“We have a 2-0 lead, so we just have to come next week and finish off the game… we have to let the players know that it’s not over until its over because any time you slip you can slide, so come next week I’m coming all out to win I’m not coming to defend,” he noted.
On Thursday, the Portmorebased Christian Pen created a few chances of their own, but were second best for the most part of a contest played on a slippery outfield due to intermittent drizzles throughout.
Frazsiers got the go-ahead goal with a touch of good fortune on 42 minutes when Alton’s free-kick took a cruel deflection off the wall, which wrong-footed Vernon Vaughn in goal for Christian Pen.
Chrtistian Pen conceded a second goal in the 72nd minute when Alanzo slid the ball underneath Vaughn to complete a sweeping counterattack started by Alton.
Christian Pen coach Sheldon Clarke now faces an uphill task to overcome a deficit against the best team in the league, but he is not losing faith.
“I think we saw were we went wrong and next week I think we can fix it (though) it’s plenty work,” he said.
