Ja to field ambulant athletes at Paralympics
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Jamaica will field ambulant athletes for the first time in a Paralympics when they enter athletes in individual and relays at the event set for London later this year after the staging of the Olympic Games.
The Jamaica Paralympics
Association (JPA) announced
Wednesday that in
addition to the usual field events, athletes, including Shane Hudson, and a 4x100m relay team will compete in the two-week event and “should be in contention for a medal”.
A release from the association said president Christopher Samuda, was “guardedly optimistic” and believes that the athletes who will represent Jamaica in London “will not only continue the fine tradition but will be historical in many respects”.
The JPA is hoping that Tanto Campbell (discus), Alphanso Cunningham
(discus and javelin), Sylvia Grant (javelin and discuss,) and Shane Hudson (200m and 400m) will be able to win medals in their respective classes.
The Jamaican
12-day training camp at the University of Bedfordshire in preparation for the start of the competition on August 29.
Chef de mission, Suzanne Harris-Henry and head of the medical team Dr Rory Dixon will ensure that arrangements and conditions are firmly in place and right for the “Jamaica to the World” campaign.
