New Green, Newland into Super League semi-finals
MANCHESTER club New Green and St Catherine’s Newland have joined group winners Rivoli United and Meadows in the semi-finals of the South Central Super League.
This followed the playing of the final preliminary round of matches on the weekend, which saw New Green edging fellow semi-final aspirant Royal Lakes, 1-0, at Brooks Park and finished runners-up in Group A, behind Rivoli United.
The battle in Group B was equally important with Portmore-based Newland and St Elizabeth’s Super Action fighting for second spot. In the end, Newland came away 1-0 victors at STETHS, while ending the hosts’ four-game winning streak. At the other end of the table, Spartan Athletic won the do-or-die battle over Naggo Head, 2-0, and avoided relegation.
Former Premier League campaigners Naggo Head will ply their trade next season in the Major League, along with parishioner De la Vega City, as well as Downs of Manchester and Clarendon outfit Monymusk. Monymusk lost 2-3 at home to Bodles, who ended fourth in Group A and seventh in the overall table.
Downs closed their season in embarrassing fashion after being hammered 4-1 by Meadows, while De la Vega managed a face-saving 2-2 draw against Rivoli at Prison Oval. The organisers are yet to disclose a schedule for the semi-finals and finals.
