Bob Marley mega-fan Snoop Dogg attends the legend’s LA film premiere
For his triumphant headlining performance with Dr Dre at Coachella this weekend, Snoop Dogg wore a Bob Marley medallion proudly around his neck. The rapper is a huge fan of the iconic singer, who died in 1981, and on Wednesday he got to express his love and admiration for the Jamaican star at a premiere of a film about his life.
And the 40-year-old hip hop auteur was joined by several members of Bob’s family, including three of his proud sons, 42-year-old Ziggy and Robbie and Rohan, both 39. The film has had a tumultuous genesis; initially Martin Scorsese was slated to direct. However, Scorsese dropped out due to scheduling problems and was replaced by Jonathan Demme, who then dropped out due to creative differences with producer Steve Bing during the beginning of editing. The Last King of Scotland director Kevin Macdonald replaced Demme
According to the official website for the movie, the film tells the story of Marley’s “universal appeal, impact on music history and role as a social and political prophet is both unique and unparalleled. It is the definitive life story of the musician, revolutionary, and legend, from his early days to his rise to international superstardom. Made with the support of the Marley family, the film features rare footage, incredible performances and revelatory interviews with the people that knew him best.”
Marley is executive-produced by Bob Marley’s son Ziggy Marley and Island Records founder Chris Blackwell. Shadow & Act spoke to Cedella Marley, 44, daughter of Bob and Rita Marley — about the film. She told them: “I’ve seen parts of it. I haven’t been able to sit and watch the entire thing. It’s an emotional journey that I’m not ready to experience yet. I think the documentary has done exactly what the family wanted it to do — to show dad in a different way, the human being that is Robert Marley; and I think Kevin did a good job with it.”
