We’re Back!
PHILADELPHIA, USA — Cornwall College and Mannings School will return to the Penn Relays for the first time in a number of years.
The two western Jamaica educational institutions will participate in two events at the meet–dubbed the ‘world’s biggest relays carnival’–at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, starting today.
Seven teams from five high schools across western Jamaica will be part of the over 50 teams from Jamaica– 42 high schools and 10 colleges– that will participate in the three -day event.
Herbert Morrison High, St Elizabeth Technical and Mannings School, who missed the last three staging are expected to compete in both boys and girls sections, while Cornwall College and Munro College will contest the high school boys section.
Munro College will be defending their high school boys’ 4x400m Championships of Americas title, while a number of athletes will also participate in individual events as well as relay races.
Cornwall College who last participated at the meet 2005 are expected to contest the 4x400m and 4x800m and will be a dark horse to make the final in the latter.
Herbert Morrison’s girls’ 4x100m girls team that finished third last year should be in contention for the title, as Seidatha Palmer who missed last year due to injuries, will strengthen the team.
In the high school girls individual events, Adriana Brown of STETHS will contest the 400m hurdles event this morning, while Opal James is entered for the long jump and Herbert Morrison’s Sashane Hansen will compete in the high jump.
Munro College’s Emmanuel Onyia who was second in the shot put last year, will seek to improve on that performance, but will be up against national team- mate Ashinia Miller of Calabar High.
Jevaughn Shaw, also of Munro, will contest the discus throw on Saturday, while his team-mates Rajae Gayle and Rolando Reid will be in the javelin throw– an event rarely contested by Jamaicans at the Penn Relays.
Ronald Levy of STETHS will contest the 400m hurdles, while Ifeanyichukwu Otuonye of Munro will participate in the long jump.
