Morgan impresses at Golden Eagle Classic
Jamaica’s national record holder and London Olympic Games qualifier Jason Morgan continued his build up to this July’s event with an impressive showing at the Golden Eagle Classic at the University of Southern Mississippi on Saturday when he set a new meet record, 64.45m, to win the event.
This was the best showing by Morgan since he set his third national record and Olympic A Qualifying standard 65.61m on Good Friday at a low-keyed meet in Louisiana, the 10th best in the world so far.
Morgan, who is the first of what fans of the throwing events are hoping will be three Jamaican men to qualify with an A standard (65.00m) for the Olympic Games, dominated the competition on Saturday winning with his first attempt of 61.40m, as second placed Shaun Haughton could only manage 51.69m and third placed Jeff Milliron threw 50.71m.
Morgan, who is based in Rushton, Louisiana, where he is coached by Larry Carmichael, his college coach at Louisiana Tech, was consistent throughout his series with four throws all over 61m with two fouls.
The former Calabar high student told the Jamaica Observer he was toying with the idea of competing in the shot put at this weekend’s JN Jamaica Invitational meet at the National Stadium, but had yet to make up his mind.
He should compete again in the discus at a meet in Louisiana on the second weekend of May he said.
