Knights slay Rebels in exciting match-up
Urban Knights defeated Runnin’ Rebels 51-48 in their first match of the FLOW/National Basketball League (NBL) season as the league continued at the National Stadium courts on Tuesday.
In the night’s other match, last season’s beaten finalist, Majesty Legends, won their first game after three matches.
In the Knights/Rebels feature, Omari Green’s game-high 22 points and 11 rebounds were not enough to get Rebels the win.
Dave Blackwood with 14 points and Fernando Young with 11 points and six assists were the leading scorers for Urban Knights, whose previous games were postponed because of rain.
The Knight’s played catch-up for the entire match as they trailed 9-17 after the first quarter, but rallied late in the second quarter to tie the score at 27-27 at the half.
However, the Rebels quickly restored their advantage in the third period, winning the quarter 11-7 for a 38-34 lead going into the last period of the match.
But again the Knights rallied and drew level twice before going ahead 46-45 through Oneil Mundle from the free-throw line with 51.3 second left.
Blackwood and Gooden (three-pointers) then scored again to give the Oneil Brown-coached team a dramatic win.
In the other game, last season’s finalists, Majesty, had to stave off a determined Portmore Flames for their first win in three starts.
Havando Dunn with 25 points, Boldon Todd with 19 points and 15 rebounds and Damion Garvey with 13 rebounds saw the legends to victory.
Jermaine Jacobs and Kenardo Smith were the top-scorers for Flames with 11 points each.
