OWNERS of the island’s toughest, most versatile, juggling and clashing auto sound systems will compete on Labour Day, May 23 at Iland Vibez Sports Bar in Greenwood on the border of St James and Trelawny.

The event, hosted by Scott’s Auto, is dubbed ‘Sound Ruption: Town vs Country’ and in this, its seventh staging, will feature four teams from Eastern Jamaica and four teams from Western Jamaica vying for bragging rights and over $100,000 in cash and prizes. The action is set to start at 5 pm.

Organiser Kingsley Scott said patrons should come prepared for an exciting showdown.

“A sound clash is a musical competition where crew members from opposing sound systems pit their skills against each other. Over the years we have had people from all over the island enter as individuals but this is the first time we have encouraged people to compete as teams. Almost every parish has its player and this year we’ll determine where the supremacy lies,” Scott told Auto.

Auto sounds set to compete include Naseve, City Fusion, Yumi Hi-power and Bad Influence representing team ‘Town’ and White Camry, Hifonics, Real Man and Love People representing team ‘Country’.

This year’s instalment will also include a ‘Female 45 Showdown’ wherein any female from the crowd (provided she is prepared with a CD of music) will be allowed to compete against other females in a tune for tune clash for the chance to win a trophy and a cash prize of $10,000.

Last year’s winning sound Portmore, St Catherine-based Naseeve has held the top spot for the last two years. Ripton Wedderburn, the man behind the sound, says he’s prepared to defend his title.

“I am my biggest competition, the only way I can be defeated is if I make a mistake. But if anyone wants to try to beat me I’d advise them to play hard,” Wedderburn told Auto.

“I’ve always loved music, it stimulates me to see other people move and enjoy themselves and I actually have a loyal fan base who’ll be supporting me all the way,” he continued.

Entrants will compete in four rounds during which representatives from each team will battle using 45s, dubplates and just about any form of music desired, for a set period of time. They will be judged based entirely on their ability to keep the crowd entertained.
