Good signal from JLP
Dear Editor,
The recent appointment of an independent committee to analyse the JLP’s performance in the recent polls, as well as the party’s relationship with the electorate and other related issues, is a signal of a national political institution coming of age and should be welcomed by all well-thinking Jamaicans as an enhancement to our democracy.
A weak and disorganised JLP is an impediment to truly democratic, responsive and responsible governance. A weak Opposition reduces the effectiveness and quality service delivery of any administration.
Historically, the JLP has suffered from the pre-eminence of personality over principles, individualism over ideology and an unscientific approach to political organisation.
The cult of personality that has imbued the political maturity and development of the JLP as a potent political force is a direct result of the formation of the JLP, which was a one-man party: from Bustamante, to Seaga, to Golding.
The PNP has led the way in the scientific approach to political organisation, underpinned by a socialist ideology, no matter how outdated, and bolstered by a traditional association with academia.
The establishment of the independent committee is a good starting point for the re-branding, re-tooling and re-positioning of the JLP and Andrew Holness, the JLP leader, and the present crop of leaders must be commended for this bold initiative. Jamaica now waits with baited breath for the new energised JLP.
The recent performance of the Labour party in Britain under the leadership of the youthful Ed Miliband should serve as a source of encouragement.
