Weir, Parchment among winners in Cayman
WORLD 100m champion Yohan Blake signalled he could be faster this year after speeding to 9.84 seconds to win the 100m at the first Cayman International Meet in Georgetown on Wednesday.
This time was just two hundredths of a second off Blake’s personal best of 9.82 set last year.
After running his personal best twice in September last year, it took Blake just two races to run his second fastest time ever after opening his season with 9.90 at the UTech Classics at the National Stadium last month.
Four Jamaicans, including Warren Weir in the 200m, Hansle parchment in the 110m hurdles and Novelene Williams-Mills in the women’s 400m, were winners.
Blake, who is the world leader in the 200m after his 19.91 seconds at last weekend’s JN Jamaica International and is second on the IAAF rankings to Usain Bolt (9.82) in the 100m, said he was not 100 per cent fit on Wednesday.
In an interview just after the race, Blake said he had an upset stomach but said the race was “a good build-up”, while crediting training partner Bolt with “motivating” him.
Michael Frater was the runner-up in 10.05, with Trinidad’s Keston Bledman third in 10.06. Kemar Bailey-Cole was seventh in 10.29, the same as American Travis Padgett.
Warren Weir created the biggest surprise of the meet when he streaked to a 20.13 seconds to win the 200m. Canada’s Rondell Sorillo was second in 20.57, with Jamaica’s Lansford Spence third in 20.65.
Ainsley Waugh (20.67) and national 400m record-holder Germaine Gonzales (20.79) were next, both ahead of USA’s Shawn Crawford (20.80).
Williams-Mills, who ran the world-leading 49.99 seconds to win last weekend, won in 50.35, beating Canadian Jenna Martin (51.69) and US Virgin Island’s Chantel Malone (51.73). Jamaica’s World Indoors semi-finalist Dominique Blake was seventh in 52.85.
Fresh on the heels of his 13.19 seconds PR on Saturday, the UWI-Mona Parchment edged USA’s Joel Brown. Both were credited with 13.31, with Barbados’ Ryan Brathwaithe third in 13.41.
World Junior silver medallist Shermaine Williams ran a personal best 12.98 seconds for third in the 100m hurdles behind Americans Ginnie Crawford (12.66) and Kristin Castlin (12.68). Nickesha Wilson was fourth in 13.00 and Vonette Dixon fifth in 13.01.
World leader Carmelita Jeter took the women’s 100m in 11.04 seconds, and Ricardo Chambers was third in the 400 in 45.87 behind Bahamas’ Chris Brown (45.14) and Ramon Miller (45.48).
