Kgn Commissioners, Packers are Golden League champions
Kingston Commissioners and Packers emerged champions of the 2012 Bull Investment-sponsored Golden League and Knockout football competitions, respectively.
Kingston Commissioners won their fourth league title after being crowned champions in 2006, 2008 and 2009. They finished the season on 27 points, with Christian Ambassadors second with 25 points and 2011 champions Santos third on 20 points.
Twelve teams participated in this year’s competition. Debutant Ian Burnett, of Santos, won the leading goal scorer award for both competitions. He was the league’s top marksman with 11 goals, and the Knockout winner with four goals.
John Hunter of Kingston Commissioners won the MVP award.
Meanwhile, Packers, the team which finished last in the league competition, won the knockout title by clipping Barbican 1-0 in the final last week Saturday at the Barbican playing field. Donovan Grant got the all important goal for Packers in the 17th minute.
Packers also defeated the defending champions Santos on penalties in their semi-final. They won the Dino Lyn trophy. Lyn, now 72 years, also plays for the winners. He is a former St George’s College Old Boy Manning Cup player and also a former national player.
In the opening match, Santos defeated Wonders 3-1 with Gordon Murphy scoring a brace and Burnett netting his league-leading 11th goal.
Managing Director of Bull Investment Limited, Wayne Gentles, who was pleased with the running of the league, told the founder and organiser of the competition, Carlton Galbraith, that his company will be back as sponsors of the league next season.
