Morgan smashes discus mark again
JAMAICAN Jason Morgan continues to forge a name for himself in the discus when he broke the national record for the second time in six weeks yesterday and fourth time overall with a sensational throw of 67.15m at the Peak Performance Invitational meet at the University of Louisiana Monroe.
Morgan, who broke his own record of 64.11m with a 65.61m at the Leon Johnson Invitational at the Walter P Ledet Track Complex on the campus of Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana on Good Friday, April 6, has extended the national record by over three metres this year already.
Yesterday’s distance saw him shoot up on the IAAF ranking by 11 places to third behind Hungarian Zoltan Kovago (68.21) and Poland’s Piotr Malachowski (67.53), the latter set in Doha, Qatar at the opening IAAF Diamond League meeting on Friday.
Morgan who told the Jamaica Observer yesterday that he had set his sights on the 70m mark by the time he gets to the Olympics, said while he is “happy”, he is not “excited”.
The former Calabar sprinter turned thrower said he knows the 70m barrier is not far off.
“I am ready to throw 70m. I don’t know why it’s not connecting yet,” adding he just fouled a throw under the 70m mark yesterday.
“I know the 70m mark is gonna come, I just hope it comes in London,” he said.
Morgan said he would take the next week off from competition, but would be trying to find a club meet around the end of May to get him ready for the IAAF Diamond League meeting in New York on June 9 where he will make his second appearance.
The gregarious athlete will be making his first Olympic appearance after competing at the IAAF World Championships twice and just failed to make it to the finals in Daegu, South Korea last year, finishing 18th overall after the first round with a best throw of 61.75m.
