NORTHERN Caribbean University, through the Morris Entrepreneurship Centre and the Training and Consultancy Services and Career Services departments, is offering training in entrepreneurship and other specialised areas as a means of increasing skill sets and competences among the Jamaican workforce.

The training — offered on the main campus in Mandeville, as well as the satellite campuses in Montego Bay, Runaway Bay and Kingston — targets the unemployed and those seeking to go into business for themselves. It comes against the backdrop of the uncertainty in the current global job market, which the university said is a factor that can cause imbalance in one’s life.

“The vicissitudes of life and the changing fortunes of our circumstances as currently exist in the global job market is one external factor that has created the possibility for imbalance in many person’s lives. Increasingly, people must become more adept at creating their own employment,” it said.

“Life may be perceived as a great equation. An equation has two sides which are equal in value, and it is said to be balanced. If it is not balanced then it is an non-equation. The equation of our lives is balanced when our skill set and competences and our emotional dispositions are adequate for managing the circumstances external to our lives,” the university said.

“In other words, we can cope with demands being made of us. If we are not contented then adjustments will be necessary to create balance. We may create this balance by increasing our skill set, competencies and efficiency, and/or reduce the demands we are obliged to fulfil.”
