Jaguars, Hoopers hunt 2nd wins in NBL West
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Pre-season favourites Granville Jaguars and MoBay Hoopers, both winners last weekend as the Flow National Basketball League-West got underway, will meet today at the Montego Bay Cricket Club, starting at 6:30 pm.
Granville had beaten defending champions Catherine Hall All-Stars, while Hoopers turned back Railway Lane Tigers in their opening matches.
Jaguars will come into today’s game on a roll after getting a measure of revenge over Catherine Hall All-Stars, beating them 63-57 in a competitive opening affair for both teams at the Montego Bay Cricket Club on Sunday.
Granville Jaguars lost to Catherine Hall in last year’s final after topping the points table after the regular season, falling short once again after the teams had shared the regular season games with one win each.
Sunday’s game was not without the usual heated moments between the two bitter rivals, but the game was evenly-contested for the most parts.
Granville, who managed to sign former Tivoli Gardens player Andrew Whilby in the off-season, got off to a fast start and opened a double digit lead, 23-12, after the first quarter.
The points dried up as Granville struggled at the start of the second quarter, scoring just two points in the first five minutes as Catherine Hall clawed their way back into the game to trail by eight points, 33-25, at half-time.
Granville restored their dominance in the third quarter that they won 19-15 before Catherine Hall stormed back in the fourth to close the gap.
The game ended on a sour note after Catherine Hall’s Kurt Dorman was ejected for a retaliatory strike against Granville’s back-up point guard Douglas Powell, causing a stoppage for over five minutes.
Dave Black Jnr, last year’s topscorer, led Granville with 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Leroy Lawrence scored 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Before being ejected, Dorman had scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Catherine Hall, while Goyan Malcolm and Jermaine Rerrie scored 11 points each.
