Tribute in song to Prince Buster
SINGER Baron McKenley (or Breezy McKenley) is known for his tribute songs to celebrities including Oprah Winfrey, Fats Domino and even United States president Barack Obama. His latest tribute recognises the achievements of ska pioneer Prince Buster.
The song is titled Prince Buster’s Anniversary and is a spin-off on Buster’s 1963 hit They Got to Come.
“Prince Buster is one of my greatest musical heroes and he holds very special place in my heart, he is a true giant of Jamaican music,” said McKenley.
Buster (Cecil Campbell) was a pivotal part of the ska era of the early 1960s, recording and producing a number of hit songs for his Voice of the People label.
In a career spanning three decades, McKenley has released 11 albums. Born in Moneague, St Ann, he migrated to Britain in the early 1970s and started his career recording gospel songs for small labels.
The last 15 years has seen him do numerous tributes to persons he admires or causes close to his heart. One of his songs was dedicated to Haiti where hundreds of people died in a massive earthquake in 2010.

But it is We Party that Kurtisi is banking on to give him the big break. “Since I did We Party, I have been getting a lot of attention from dancehall fans in Jamaica, England and other parts of the world,” he said. The singer plans to release more singles in time for the summer.
• Chart Updates
The sound-track to the documentary Marley remains at the top of Billboard’s Reggae Album chart. However, 10 Great Songs by British reggae band UB40 is challenging for that place by moving into the number two spot. Following his recent extradition woes, dancehall artiste Busy Signal sees an increase in sales for his Reggae Music Again set which has jumped to number five.
