Sergeon in a pickle as medical bills mount
ALMOST five months after suffering a horrific accident on the track, Jamaica’s lone female jockey Georgino Sergeon is struggling to meet her medical expenses, which is hampering the recovery process.
Sergeon, 21, damaged her lower back in an ugly spill on January 21 when her mount Tricky Train went down in a crowded field in the seventh race on the card.
With damage to her spine, Sergeon had three screws inserted and the medical bills are sky-rocketing out of her reach.
“Medication is giving me a hard time. It is expensive and I have no help. It’s about $14,000 plus tax a month and I’m not working,” she explained.
“On the health card they only give you $10,000 for the year. When you’re not working you wouldn’t call that expensive, but now it’s very hard to maintain,” she noted.
A product of the Jockeys’ School, Sergeon, who was in the final year of her apprenticeship, started riding on September 2, 2009 and to date has ridden 55 winners, including two on the day of the spill.
However, fans may have to wait quite a while to see Sergeon back in action as although she is walking, there is still pain. Yesterday, she told the Jamaica Observer she would be visiting the doctor today for an assessment.
‘I don’t know how long, I’ll have to speak with my doctor. I still have difficulty… walking. The medications don’t get rid of the pain 100 per cent, it only decreases it,” she points out.
She is also hoping to meet with Caymanas Park officials in an effort to see how best they can assist with her medical bills until she gets back into the saddle.
