Seven get long sentences for wounding with intent
ST ANN’S BAY, St Ann — Seven St Ann men on Thursday received prison sentences ranging from 12 to 15 years for the May 26, 2007 wounding of a man with knives and machete on Market Street in Brown’s Town here in St Ann.
Justice Marva McDonald Bishop imposed 14-year prison sentences at hard labour on Kirkdane Virgo, Textroy Perry, Kemar Brown, Christopher Campbell, and Damion Raymond, a day after they were found guilty of wounding with intent by a seven-member jury in the St Ann Circuit Court.
Demone Austin, who the court was told inflicted a chop wound to the complainant’s Roger Foreman’s head and which resulted in a fractured skull, was sentenced to serve 15 years at hard labour. The other accused, Lennox Brown, received the least sentence of 12 years at hard labour.
Kenrick Wilson, who was charged with the others, was acquitted after the jurors returned a not guilty verdict against him.
Justice McDonald Bishop, after handing down the sentences, said the attack on the complainant was an awful act and that it was clear that the men intended to kill Foreman.
The prosecution was represented by Crown Counsels Andrea Martin Swaby and Broderick Smith.
They led evidence that the men viciously attacked Foreman with various weapons, including machetes and knives and seriously injured him while he was on Market Street in Brown’s Town.
The prosecution said the complainant sustained 13 different serious injuries including a fractured skull. The injuries resulted in both of Foreman’s hands becoming disabled. He also suffered serious spinal injuries.
The men reportedly attacked and chased Foreman for several metres where he was cornered close to the Brown’s Town market and chopped and stabbed repeatedly.
Another man who was charged jointly with the others absconded bail and is now being sought by the police.
