Bicknell ‘Blaises’ trail in Bahamas
JAMAICAN Blaise Bicknell won the International Tennis Federation Under-14 Jonkanoo Bowl by beating 14-year-old Bahamian Joshua Turnquest 6-4, 6-2 in the final at the Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association Courts in Nassau yesterday.
This was Bicknell’s first ITF tournament, as he has just reached the age for participation, and he played “amazing tennis”, said Rayne Russell said.
Russell also said that Bicknell played with great panache to reach the semi-final on Tuesday by overcoming Bermuda’s number two seed William Way 6-1, 6-7, 6-1 in a match that lasted three hours.
“(Bicknell) played a mature game for his age as the rainy conditions were terrible, where at times the wind was at 15mph… held his nerve and kept the pressure on with rallies continuing for as long as 20 to 30 balls a rally,” said Russell.
To reach the final, Turnquest upstaged Jamaican Dimitri Bird in the semis to avert an all-Jamaica final, but both will contest the doubles final after defeating Bahamas’ numbers one and two Danny Johnson and Oneal Mortimer in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 in the semi-finals yesterday.
