See people business and leave it alone
“Cock mouth ketch cock” is a famous Jamaican saying.
With all the people who have been caught, including myself, one would think that others would tread cautiously, but alas this is not to be. I guess the world would be boring if we all learnt life lessons from other’s experiences.
Politicians get caught all the time, especially when they are in opposition and they want to make the ruling party look bad. Then elections roll around and the shoe is on the other foot and no one recalls the judgmental stance they took when they sat on the other side of the House.
I really do get at our politicians a lot, perhaps because they are such easy targets. So this week I’m giving them a break and I will be stepping on the toes of another group; our dancehall artistes. Oh yes. Ninjaman’s now famous On Stage interview echoed a lot of my thoughts regarding the current state of dancehall.
I am nowhere nearly as animated as Ninjaman, but I do concur when he said, “Kartel carry dancehall gone a jail with him,” that the field was left wide open for any artiste to step up and claim supremacy. However, instead we have seen some of the lamest lyrics being produced in our music’s history.
I can’t believe in this day and age that artistes are still relying on lyrics about homosexuality to get a ‘forward’.
Call me simple, but haven’t they learnt anything from Beenie Man? At least his apology was made public and in true Beenie Man form he milked it for every ounce of publicity, but even the so-called ‘gangster’ hardcore artistes who have uttered aloud that they will never ‘bow’ have had to sheepishly meet and make peace with homosexual groups so that they can continue to ‘eat a food’.
Too bad for them that they needed to be preaching constantly about a group they claim to detest so much. But I have always maintained that shoemaker talk bout shoes. If you are into women, then sing/deejay about women. Why give importance and elevate a lifestyle you abhor to such a status that every hit song you make has to be about them? Young artiste, take heed; don’t make yuh mouth catch you.
I am not saying that the homosexual groups need to expect apologies and make demands, but if them name never call, they would have no rights. As a matter of fact, the homosexual rights groups need not feel special since as a culture we wish death upon everybody. If we were to take dancehall lyrics as gospel, every informer fi dead; badmind people fi dead; woman weh nuh waan run di tings fi dead, etc. This whole island would be a ghost town.
It is sad that the Jamaicans who feel compelled to translate lyrics for these groups to highlight the negative wishes towards gay people don’t make it a priority to explain our culture to them. So sad, but true, the moral of the story is “See people business and leave it alone”. Don’t be put in a position to eat humble pie for lyrics you sang in order to ‘buss’. Have a great weekend, folks.
